GFL Environmental Inc., a waste and recycling services provider based in Vaugh, Ontario, has formed the Resource Recovery Alliance (RRA) in response to Ontario’s extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulation requiring product and packaging producers to operate and fully finance Ontar- io’s Blue Box program. RRA will become a producer respon- sibility organization (PRO) under the new legislation and will be vertically integrated within GFL’s service offerings. Additionally, RRA has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Canadian Stewardship Services Alliance (CSSA), which is an organization that provides support ser- vices for packaging and printed paper stewardship organi- zations across Canada. RRA said it will be a comprehensive resource recovery and compliance solution for producers in North America. The group will use GFL’s existing capa- bilities in the collection, sorting, processing, marketing and reporting of Blue Box material in Ontario. Southside Recycling Files Lawsuit Against Chicago Chicago, Illinois-based Southside Recycling, which has constructed a recycling facility on the city’s southeast side, has filed a lawsuit in Illinois state court directing the city of Chicago to issue a final permit to the company. The lawsuit alleges that the city has wrongfully failed to issue the last permit needed for the facility to begin op- erating, despite acknowledging for months that Southside Recycling has satisfied all the requirements. In addition to court orders mandating issuance of the permit and barring the city from interfering with the company’s lawful use of its property, the lawsuit requests damages in excess of $100 million from the city. Southside Recycling, along with parent company RMG In- vestment Group LLC, had previously filed a federal lawsuit with the same language as the state court lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Chicago against the city of Chicago and Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, earlier this summer. United States District Judge Robert M. Dow Jr. terminated the lawsuit in late June, writing that the arguments in the dispute are better suited for state court. Green Meadow Acquires Riverbend Environmental Green Meadow Sustainable Solutions, an environmental services firm, has acquired Riverbend Environmental Ser- vices LLC of Mississippi. Owned by a group of investors led by Bernhard Capital Partners, Green Meadow has assumed ownership of the company’s assets, including the Riverbend Landfill in Jeffer- son County, Mississippi, and transfer stations in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.The Fayette, Missis- sippi-based company will also maintain existing contractual partnerships with municipalities in the region,.
