EMANUELLA HEIDEMAN M.S. in Emergency Services, ’24 My work in international aid has been deeply enriched by the knowledge, skills and connections I gained through the M.S. in Emergency Services program at Embry-Riddle. Navigating the complexities of global aid requires strong critical thinking, ethical decision-making and practical management skills — all of which the program fostered through interdisciplinary coursework and collaborative learning. Courses like Crisis Emergency Risk Communication and Ethics in the Public Sector sharpened my ability to lead ethically and communicate effectively during crises. Psychological Issues Among Emergency Services Personnel deepened my understanding of trauma and resilience, which has been crucial in supporting vulnerable communities. I also built practical expertise through courses in Occupational Safety and Health Management, Atmospheric Conditions in Emergency Services and Statistics in the Public Sector, improving my ability to manage safety protocols and data-driven decision-making in diverse settings. The program’s emphasis on resilience-building and comprehensive emergency management gave me a strategic lens to strengthen systems in both developing and developed nations. Today, I approach every challenge with a toolkit grounded in theory, sharpened by practice and inspired by a global commitment to service.
ANGELIA KEEVER B.S. in Homeland Security, minors in Security and Environmental Science, and the 4+1 M.S. Program in Human Security and Resilience, ’25 After nearly 20 years in the airline industry and 13 years living abroad, the pandemic lockdowns gave me time to reflect and, ultimately, inspired me to pursue a degree in security. Embry-Riddle became more than a university; it became a community where I found meaningful connection, support and growth. Through study abroad experiences, scenario-based learning and outstanding faculty mentorship, I gained confidence, critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of global security challenges. My coursework in emergency preparedness, crisis response and resilience-building opened my eyes to the interconnectedness of civil defense, disaster management and community planning. Studying initiatives like the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Lightning Initiative had a personal impact, showing how aviation professionals can play a direct role in combating human trafficking. The 4+1 program in Human Security and Resilience expanded my perspective further, helping me connect complex threats with real-world community recovery efforts. Experiences like the Lahaina wildfires underscored the urgent need for well-prepared, compassionate leadership. Thanks to the knowledge and encouragement I received at Embry-Riddle, I now approach every situation, both professionally and personally, with greater awareness, research-based planning and a strong commitment to service.
