Dr. Donna Roberts Associate Dean for Faculty, Interim Chair, Department of Human Factors, Safety and Social Sciences
Dr. Alexander Siedschlag Dean and Professor
Dr. Alexander Siedschlag is the dean of the Worldwide College of Arts & Sciences and a professor of Homeland Security and Security Studies in the Department of Security and Emergency Services. Before joining Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2022, he served as the chair of Penn State World Campus Homeland Security programs — a collaboration across nine colleges — and as the interim director of Penn State’s School of Public Affairs. Born in West Berlin during the time of the American Sector, Dr. Siedschlag holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Political Science, Sociology and Psychology from the University of Munich, Germany as well as a Venia Legendi (“habilitation”) for Political Science from Humboldt University Berlin, Germany. Dr. Siedschlag’s research focuses on security cultures as well as the societal aspects and ethical, legal and social issues (ELSI) of homeland and civil security.
Dr. Donna Roberts is a professor, the associate dean for faculty in the Worldwide College of Arts & Sciences and previously served as chair of the Department of Human Factors, Safety and Social Sciences. She is an active fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and a member of the Embry-Riddle Jack R. Hunt Society. Dr. Roberts has been with the university since 2003. Dr. Roberts’ research interests encompass various areas of psychology and education, including personality, consumer psychology, media psychology, generational studies, learning styles and the intersection between psychology and the arts.
Dr. David Higgins Chair, Department of Humanities & Communication
Dr. Tanya Corbin Chair, Department of Emergency, Disaster and Global Security Studies
Dr. David M. Higgins is an associate professor of English and chair of the Department of Humanities & Communication at Embry-Riddle Worldwide. He is also a senior editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books, a public literary arts magazine with over four million monthly readers. Dr. Higgins is the author of Reverse Colonization: Science Fiction, Imperial Fantasy, and Alt-Victimhood, which won the 2021 Science Fiction Research Association Book Award. He has also published a critical monograph examining Ann Leckie’s science fiction masterwork Ancillary Justice, and his research has been published in journals such as American Literature, Science Fiction Studies, Paradoxa and Extrapolation as well as in edited volumes such as The Cambridge History of Science Fiction and The Cambridge Companion to American Science Fiction. Dr. Higgins is also a fellow with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Climate Literacy, and he serves as an editor for Climate Lit, an open-access compendium of environmental literacy resources for educators. In the public sphere, Dr. Higgins has been a featured speaker on NPR’s radio show On Point, and his literary journalism has been published in the Los Angeles Review of Books and The Guardian.
Dr. Tanya Corbin holds a Ph.D. in Political Science, an M.A. in Public Policy from Claremont Graduate University and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of New Orleans. She is a professor and chair of the Department of Emergency, Disaster and Global Security Studies. Before joining Embry-Riddle, she held academic and administrative appointments at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Radford University, including as professor and chair of the Department of Political Science and acting director of Interdisciplinary Studies. Dr. Corbin’s research agenda is broadly focused on disaster management, recovery and policy processes related to disasters. Her research has been featured in national organization policy plans and cited in congressional testimony. Past research projects include congressional agenda-setting, policy change, disaster recovery after Hurricane Katrina, scholarship of teaching and learning in online education and high-impact practices as well as community partnerships in disaster mitigation.
