Dear Parents/Carers,
12
What ’ s on @ The Lakes
I hope everyone has settled back into the new school term and getting back into the rigors of learning and structure of the school day.
Community Noticeboard
18
I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable partnership between our College and our parents/carers. At The Lakes, we firmly believe that student success is a collaborative effort, and your involvement plays a pivotal role in creating a nurturing and conducive learning environment for our students. Your involvement in your child ’ s education is invaluable, and it is through our partnership that we can create a thriving learning community where every student can succeed. In saying this, our students have come back into school settled and ready to learn. However, I would like to take this opportunity to let parents/carers know that we are continuing (like every other school across Victoria) to have issues with the responsible use of social media outside of school hours which is then impacting students at school. It is NOT ok to degrade people on social media and if this happens, both the school and police need to be notified. Just like inappropriate use of social media, as a school we will not tolerate students using their hands and feet to hurt others. We have seen too many incidents of students getting angry and hurting others and not walking away and/or speaking with a teacher on yard duty. We continue to educate students about the correct ways to deal with conflict, but small sections of our student community continue to take matters into their own hands. Students have the right to feel safe at school and as a school we will always put things in place to support everyone ’ s safety. If there are incidents in the yard or via social media, parents/carers will be called, and meetings will take place.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT
Last week we had the privilege of hosting several of our local feeder Kindergartens. They were impressed with the engagement of our students and the new upgrades of facilities across the Primary Campus, seeing our wonderful students in action. This is an invaluable partnership we have with our feeder Kindergartens and something we would like to continue to build moving into the future. A reminder to our families who maybe joining us in 2025, enrolments are open for Prep. Please come into the front office and speak with Karen or Tanya about this. Over the next 4 weeks, students in Years 4,5 and 6 will be involved in the statewide Attitudes to School Survey. This survey allows students to voice their thoughts about their teachers, our school and how they are feeling at school. This data is the cornerstone of everything we do here at The Lakes and compares us to every school in Victoria. Across the past 4 years, our data has continued to grow with data exceeding both state and like schools. This is something that as a leader, l am very proud of and shows that our students are proud of our school. A massive thank you to our Student Leaders who conducted a fitting and emotional ANZAC service last Wednesday. Our leaders continue to grow and develop within their role and have shown a wonderful understanding of our school and our values in everything they do. Keep up the great work! A reminder about our upcoming Trivia Night which is being held on Saturday June 1st at the Riverside Community Centre. Our Parent/Carer Fundraising Committee have been working overtime to get this up and running. Please come and support this event. Please keep an eye out for information about this event via Compass over the next few weeks. A massive thank you to our fundraising committee – Amanda, Jenny, Helen, Veronica, Katrina, Karen and Briohny for all the work you do for our school. It is much appreciated. Lastly, from a personal perspective, I will be taking some time away from The Lakes to take an Acting Principal position at Norris Bank Primary School in Bundoora. Robert Zull, Bec Sutton and Scott McLean will step into my role during my absence but please be assured that it will be business as usual. I am proud of what we have created here at The Lakes in the past 4 ½ years as Campus Principal and have appreciated the support of parents/carers, teachers, and students.
Have a wonderful week and rest of the term.
I will see you to start Term 3.
STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
YEAR 4 REFLECTION NEVE & COHEN YEAR 4 SRC
Hey everyone. This Term in Year 4 has been super cool because we've been working on making a lunchbox that can keep our hot food hot and our cold food cold. We've been learning all about how to use special materials and technology to do this, like insulation and temperature control. It's been fun trying out different designs and seeing which works best. We've been testing our lunchbox designs and making changes to make them even better. It's been awesome working together with our friends to come up with cool ideas! Next week, we're going on a trip to Science Works, and we're so excited! We'll get to see how all the science stuff we've been learning about is used in real life. It's going to be so cool to learn even more about temperature control and design. On Wednesday 30th the Year 3 – 6 students went to Bundoora Park with Liam, Dylan J, Alex and Jaz for our district cross country! It was freezing but we were all super excited to race against other schools. We were a bit nervous before our races but once the race started it went so quickly!
YEAR 9 REFLECTION LUKAS K & MIHAIL YEAR 9 SRC
During Term 1, all Year 9’ s participated in a Morrisby Testing where we answered questions on our interests. We found out from these tests the careers that are most suited to us. We then had interviews with people that work for Morrisby and they spoke about our careers in the future and what would be most suited for us. We participated in our last NAPLAN ever where we were tested for our knowledge and understanding of the English language and its wide variety of outstanding punctuation and grammar that lie dormant within this diverse and complicated yet sophisticated language. On the contrary we were also tested on the numerical and algebraic knowledge of our year 9 peers. As we chiseled, cooked, coded, acted, drew and expanded our knowledge of the Indonesian language through our elective courses, we all gained a new skill that we have added to our ever - growing skillset of unimaginable possibilities and understandings.
Last Wednesday on the 24th of April we all paid our respects during the annual ANZAC commemoration which took place within our school ’ s gymnasium.
As we ponder about the opportunity to participate in this year ’ s City Experience, we can ’ t help but be thrilled at the days to come where we slowly but surely grow closer towards the once in a life time experience.

FUNDRAISING & COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
The Fundraising team continue to plan and deliver a range of activities for our school, serving the dual purpose of running events that build community and social connections, whilst raising funds for ideas that have been brought to us directly from staff and students. All volunteers, without the team ’ s generous donation of time, these events would not be possible.
If you would like to help out, or would like to contribute in any shape or form, we would love to hear from you! Please contact us at 8846 - fundraising@schools.vic.gov.au

TRIVIA NIGHT
After a very long hiatus, Lakes Trivia Night is back on Saturday 1 June! We are excited to have booked TriviaOz to host the night, who have a wealth of experience hosting trivia events across Melbourne for schools, corporates and social clubs. The event promises to be a fun night with games, prizes and lots of laughs!
Both table bookings of 10 are available to purchase, as well as individual tickets. For individual tickets, we will try our best to seat you with other individual ticket holders from similar year levels.
Money raised will go towards purchasing outdoor yard activities for students on both campuses.
We would love to support our Lakes family businesses by giving them the opportunity to promote themselves at the event. If your business would like to donate small items or vouchers that can be used for door prizes, the team would love to hear from you. The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COLLEGE CONNECTIONS
The College ’ s 2023 School Performance Report has just been released by the Department of Education. 2023 SCHOOL PERFORMANCE REPORT
In the report, School Performance is assessed against five performance groups, those being:
The Lakes South Morang College, received the following feedback for our 2023 year:
This is a very exciting development for our College as we progress on our journey of continual improvement. To provide context, in 2022, the overall performance of the College was deemed Renew. The 2023 report now sees the overall performance of the College at Stretch. The 2023 report showed the College had increased in areas of Influence (performance being high or very high) and Stretch (performance improving). At the Whittlesea Schools Network Conference held this week, schools in our area were presented with network performance data. Out of the 41 schools in our network, only one school was awarded an overall performance of Influence. The Lakes, was one of only two schools in the network to be awarded an overall performance of Stretch. This is a great achievement for the school, and something that we are very proud of achieving. The 2023 report showed that the most significant areas of Influence for the College were in the Achievement Domains – Reading and Numeracy, followed by School Climate. An area for improvement for the College in 2024 as identified through this report including: Engagement, which can be supported through increased student attendance at the College – every day counts!; and, Student Attitude, particularly across Years 7 - 12 through stimulated learning, sense of confidence and a sense of connection and community between students. We look forward to working with students, staff and parents/carers as key drivers of change in these areas. As we head into annual school performance surveying period, we cannot stress enough the importance of feedback from our College community: students, through the Attitudes to School Survey; parents/carers through the Parent Opinion Survey; and, staff through the School Staff Survey.

It is important that funding made available in 2024 supports students to participate in school trips, camps, and sporting activities this year rather than being held for future years. This funding can also be used in conjunction with any funding accrued from previous years. If you applied for CSEF through our school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year, unless there has been a change in your family circumstances. If you would like to apply for the first time, please contact the Primary Campus office on 9404 9000 or Secondary Campus office on 9401 9419 and ask for an application form. You can also download the form, and find out more about the program and eligibility, on the Department of Education and Training ’ s Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund web page.
