Dive With Dad: Building Family Bonds Below the Surface by Margo Peyton , co-owner Kid’s Sea Camp, Columbia, SC

C ELEBRATING FATHERS WHO dive with their children is both meaningful and timely, especially as we approach Father’s Day on June 21. At Family Divers and Kids Sea Camp, we have been creating memorable family diving experiences for more than 26 years. Each year, we produce a special “The Good Dad” T-shirt that reads, “A good dad does not just tell you he loves you, he shows you.” That message perfectly aligns with our family-of-divers logo and the heart of what we do at FamilyDivers.com. Being a scuba dad is more than cool. It is deeply meaningful. There is nothing quite like giving a father the gift of diving with his child, or children, as his best buddy. Whether it is a father-daughter dive, a father-son dive, or a whole family dive, these shared moments create lasting bonds. Great parents understand that love is an action, and they share their passions

with their kids. Importantly, a dad does not have to be a biological father. He can be a mentor, stepdad, grandfather, uncle, or any positive male role model who brings energy, encouragement, and guidance to a child’s life. Proven Father’s Day Promotions That Work At Kids Sea Camp, we run a popular promotion that offers 50% off a dad’s dive package when he is diving with a family of three or more. We also provide a commemorative Father’s Day shirt and hat. Dads wear these shirts proudly for years af- terward. The response has been outstanding because the promotion speaks directly to what diving fathers want most, quality time underwater with their kids in a safe, supportive environment. Dive shops can create their own Father’s Day promotions in a variety of ways. A few ideas include: A family day dive trip with dad at 50% off, offered as a ▪ gift certificate or coupon. A Father’s Day barbecue, oyster roast, or shop gathering ▪ paired with a special discount for dad on dive gear, dive trips, or classes. Local boat dives, lake dives, or gear promotions that cel- ▪ ebrate multigenerational participation, including grandpa, dad, and the whole family. For senior divers, remember to offer valet diving whenever possible. Grandparents will feel welcomed, cared for, and in- vigorated when diving with their grandkids, especially when the experience is set up correctly to meet their needs. These events often bring three generations of divers together. Grandparents love joining family activities with their grandkids, and those shared experiences create powerful memories and long-term repeat business. We have also found that posting on social media and other multimedia platforms to celebrate parents who actively dive with their children builds strong community loyalty and inspires other families to participate. What Makes a Dive Shop Truly Family-Friendly To earn parents’ trust, especially dads who want to introduce or continue diving with their kids, dive shops must show that they understand the unique needs of family diving. Families are looking for more than a dive trip. They are looking for confidence, safety, comfort, and guidance.
