AppalachianPT: Let There Be Light….& It Was Good

HOWDOES LASER THERAPYWORK

(continued fromoutside) Colors of light are formed by different wavelengths of light and thus the scientific explanation continues. Let’s just say Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) is a different wavelength allowing deeper penetration into objects depending on themakeup of the tissue or object involved. We all are familiar with taking a flashlight and placing it under our

fingers with them together to see our fingers turn red or pink due to light penetration. This is exactly what LASER does but on a much more in depth and powerful way. Older technology would describe lasers as being either a hot or cold laser. Hot lasers would emit heat and of course cold lasers would not. Typically hot lasers were used for cutting in industry or in themedical field to perform surgery. Not only does the surgical laser cut but it also emits heat, therefore decreasing bleeding. Technically the class IV laser we have is also a hot laser because it emits heat but it is far different than a surgical laser. Bottom line, it helps tissue heal from the inside out by using light energy to excite cellular bodies to produce energy and decrease inflammation, swelling and improve circulation. These are all desirable actions we can affect with laser. It can be a game changer when dealing with post-surgical situations to help with healing and the trauma of surgery. It also works with acute as

well as chronic conditions equally well. Laser although by itself is a great modality, when combined with physical therapy the effects and results are often enhanced. Rehab time is usually reduced due to hastened healing and less pain. This allows for patients to get back to their normal activities faster thus with less visits and interruptions of life. PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHTS

“The pain and restrictions vanished!” “I had been experiencing carpel tunnel symptoms on and off for the last 15 years. I had been diagnosed with Carpel Tunnel Syndrome in 2017 and had been scheduled for surgery but life insisted it (the surgery) be postponed. I had scheduled the surgery for this year but decided to pursue physical therapy before going under the knife. Upon the recommendation of two close friends, I came to Appalachian Physical Therapy. Initially I had a rocky start but Bill took me on personally and the difference was night and day. After his initial consultation and treatment, the pain and restrictions vanished. I recommend this practice to anyone experiencing physical discomfort. ” - Phoebe R.

“My knee is much stronger and less painful!” “I first met Karen years ago when she was doing lectures at the senior center (they were always informative and entertaining)! Back then when I was having shoulder problems, she helped me with pre and post-op rotator cuff surgery. Currently I have been working on rehab for a knee injury. When I started PT with Karen, it was painful and I had difficulty walking, climbing stairs, etc. Karen gave me exercises to strengthen the knee and used her “magic fingers” to relieve the pain. My knee is much stronger and less painful and activities of daily living are much easier thanks to her. I also appreciate the help of Kaitlin and Dalton during treatment time. Thanks to Karen and the staff, I always recommend Appalachian Physical Therapy to friends needing PT treatment.” - Mary B. “I have NO PAIN reaching behind me or reaching up overhead!” “I had a lot of pain and a hard time getting my shirt and coat on because of pain. I also could not reach behind my back. Sleep was difficult as I could not get comfortable and was waking at night. Now that I have had treatment, I have NO PAIN reaching behind me or reaching up overhead. I can also sleep well at night. I would highly recommend Treatment at Appalachian Physical Therapy to anyone who is having shoulder pain. The staff is really great! ” -Jeff W.
