HELLO STRASBURG!
with officials at the White House to help with efforts aimed at improving conditions for the world’s homeless children. Another young man has recently graduated from medical school and is the newest doctor on the hospital medical staff on the same campuswhere he once lived and grewup! Both of these outstanding youngmen are shining examples of having a genuine concern for the well being of their fellow brothers and sisters. They are serving in capacities that are helping others. Why am I telling you about these people in a land far away? Because I watched the passion of these youngmen as they grew up and are now serving others in ways that would
To the tune of, “Hello Dolly!”: Hello Strasburg! This is Doctor Dave! It’ll be so nice to be back where I belong! You’re looking swell Strasburg! I can tell Strasburg, you’re still glowin’, you’re still crowin’, you’re still goin’ strong! Yes, it’s true! Dave Brewster is coming back to Strasburg! I cannot tell you how excited I am to be returning to where I had been for many years! You trusted me to do the right things in the past and at long last, I am able to continue doing just that by returning to serve you once again as I got to do five long years ago. I have truly missed getting to hear your stories, learning about what’s been going on that’s exciting in your lives, and telling me all about the latest game/match/event with the Strasburg Rams and other youth organizations. I got to help bring athletic training into all the county high schools and am excited to renew the working relationships I have enjoyed in years past. I have been so proud of the Strasburg athletes I have been honored to work with! I remember the year several seniors on the baseball team ended up not playing. It was a challenge the rest of the team took up and they worked very hard to do well. They worked hard enough that not only did they win the regionals, but also the state championship! We have shared many happymemories as well as those where we have cried together. I have been there for you when The Press was going full tilt (not just for rehabilitation, but remember the employee wellness days too?) along with International Automotive Components, Borden Lumber. I recall the day I got to have a tour of RR Donnelley to learn about all the different types of work people did there. Fromseeing how the plates aremadewhich the presses use to print the images on the paper to watching the huge presses roll through literally tons of paper with such precision controlled by a slight adjustment as needed from the (ink) control room, to the pages being bound, glued, and cut, then proofed, I remember thinking to myself, “It’s almost a miracle how fast this happens and how everyone needs to pay attention while at work otherwise one could get seriously hurt!” Themagic of how address labels are produced andwhich ads go in themagazines was astonishing! We saw others come to Strasburg too such as Americold, Mercury Paper, and most recently, a new ACE hardware store. I miss the Southern States especially in the spring when I was able to get fresh asparagus there! Many of you have shown your appreciation of what I have been able to help with by bringing food and all kinds of goodies into the office – this is something else I have reallymissed! There are a LOT of wonderful bakers, chefs, cooks, and somuchmore in Strasburg! Many of you have trustedme to try new recipes out onwhile we have worked together getting you back to doing what you need and want to be able to do. Believe me, I can’t wait to be back in Strasburg! Many of you are aware of amission the church I attend has been involved with for many years. As with everything in Life, there have been ups and downs. The Ebola crisis hit Sierra Leone (a country the United Nations had labeled as the world’s poorest for a number of years and was rocked by an 11 year long civil war resulting inmany amputations – think of themovie Blood Diamond) very hard with thousands of deaths. Since that time, that country’s government has ruled that all children living in an orphanage situationmust be reintegrated intomainstream society. All of the children and youth that were part of themission programs I have been associated with were the first ones to successfully meet the new mandate and have fared very well through it all thanks to one of the young men who grew up there. This youngman earned amaster’s degree in Applied Industrial/Business and Organizational Psychology from the University of South Wales. He has been invited to and met ARTWORK AT THE OFFICE
College and have been receiving instruction as I continue to paint. I enjoy the oil medium and painting realism as the old masters did. I have learned glazing techniques and how to mix paint to arrive at just the right color. Pinehurst Artist: NancyManess. Art has always been a force in my life. Growing up in Southern California I was surrounded by beautiful, creative art that always left an impression on me. Once retired, my love of art resurfaced and it was time to be serious. Having had no formal training I began once a week painting lessons for a period of time, then I was off and running, enjoying and loving every brush stroke. Find me on Facebook at Paintings by Nancy. not have seemed possible to even dream about when they were children. We share a common bond in that we all deeply care about our fellow human beings and want to do whatever we can to help improve the lives of those around us, even enabling people to help others. That is why I became a physical therapist. Many years ago I was involved in amotorcycle accident on the way tomy summer job wiring houses. Duringmy extensive physical and occupational therapy, I began to realize if I healed well enough, I could see myself becoming a physical therapist and helping others the way my physical therapists were helpingme. I began volunteering at one of the facilities where I was treated, and then changed my major to physical education frommath and physics and started working in the athletic training room at Frostburg State University in Maryland. After graduation, I worked in a PT clinic and became the head athletic trainer at Westminster High. In the effort to become a more attractive candidate for PT school, I applied for and had a full scholarship and assistantship at Indiana State University studying exercise physiology. Before completing this master’s degree, Mercy Hospital-Anderson in Cincinnati Ohio offered me a position as an exercise specialist which I accepted. Later that year, I started PT school at Shenandoah University. I graduated from SU in May of 1999 and in December of that year, graduated from ISU. In 2006, I completed a doctorate in physical therapy from Shenandoah University. I met Bill and Colleen Whiteford when I was a student doing clinical work at APT. While I was there, I learned a lot about some of the basic skills all the therapists there used. I was impressed with how much better patients felt in a short period of time. We have stayed in touch over the years primarily through our state PT association and continuing education courses. Since that time, I have obtained evenmore highly specialized training and certifications from world renowned instructors. For over 30 years, the folks at APT have been demonstrating the same philosophy I have of providing physical therapy and offering the absolute best and highest quality care. A couple pieces of advicemy parents gaveme which years later Harry Applegate confirmed is to always strive to be the best at whatever you do and do it with integrity. I receivedmore advice duringmy first graduation fromPT school fromWillard Scott, the original RonaldMcDonald and former Today show weatherman. There are only three things that matter in Life, which he refers to as The Three F’s: Faith, Family, and Friends. He told us if you keep those three things straight and in that order, we would all do well in Life. As an Eagle Scout, I have always tried to live by the Scout Oath and Law. Appalachian Physical Therapy is the place where I am able to incorporate all the above and apply the knowledge and experiences I have to help others. Keep your eyes peeled and your ear to the ground for more information on how you can take advantage of an opening screening event to be help the first of October at our new location. I am also looking forward to telling you more about laser – it helped me go fromnot being able to run 2miles to completing the Old Dominion 100 in amatter of months! Until then, be well and be safe!
Harrisonburg Artist: Kelli Hertzler. Our glorious valley, teeming with flora and fauna, is the inspiration for this artists’ work. Kelli Hertzler hikes the mountains to the east and west and kayaks the Shenandoah River with art supplies in tow to capture the experience of living in one of God’smost beautifully created places. Some pieces will feature vistas and landscapes; others will focus on the details,
the small things that often escape notice, the ‘microscapes’ all around us. Back in the studio, that inspiration transforms into watercolors, oil paintings and color pencil drawings. Kelli Hertzler studied Fine Art at JMU along with a minor in biology. She is a Signature Member of the Shenandoah Valley Watercolor Society. After 21 years of employment as an artist and designer locally, she now teaches workshops, local home-school classes and other private groups, and exhibits her work. Pinehurst Artist: Ann Marie Venezio. After my husband retired and we moved to N.C. I decided to try my hand at painting. I first took a watercolor class from a local artist in our community. From there I took a “Follow the leader” class in the medium of oils. I quickly fell in love with oil painting. In 2013 I enrolled
Pinehurst Artist: Beverly Lawson. Having my Finger Painting win a Blue Ribbon in the third grade was the first indication that Art could be in my future. I took Art Classes in Junior High School and High School, but a career in Art and design did not seem to be in the cards for me. It was not until retirement that I decided to delve into painting once again. I went on to take painting classes at Sandhills Community
in an oil painting class at Sandhills Community College. Animals aremy favorite subject to paint. I assume I can call myself a wildlife artist. I also enjoy painting pets. I do occasionally go outside the box to paint something challenging.
