He comes through to the radio au­ dience as if indeed it were his own family or congregation; ap­ parently he visualizes the hun­ dreds, sitting enrapt before their radios, open Bibles on their laps, and he takes them all in and brings them right into the pres­ ence of God.” He was talking about Dr. Louis T. Talbot, who for nearly thirty years taught a book-by­ book, verse-by-verse Bible class over the radio in one of the most fruitful ministries ever to reach the air waves. His messages are still remembered and quoted by the “old-timers” who did not miss a session. It began when radio was but an infant. Dr. Talbot saw clearly what an instrument for God this “new invention” could be. Then pastor of the Oliver Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, Minne­ sota, he began broadcasting the Word of God May 5, 1927 over WRHM to which the response was most enthusiastic. When he went to Hamilton, Ontario as pas­ tor of the Philpott Memorial Church, he continued this minis­

try which was eminently success­ ful. So shortly after he accepted the call of the historic Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles, he endeavored to interest this church in a similar outreach. But it was the time of the depression and the Church—and the Bible Institute next door— were burdened with what seemed an insurmountable debt on their buildings and the Church felt it could not assume this additional responsibility. So Dr. Talbot, ever a man of faith and courage, asked to go on the air “ on his own” and to this the church agreed. The response was so astonishing and the support came in so readily that the church was soon sold on the idea and eventually took it over as part of their ministry. It became one of the most popular religious radio broadcasts of all time and in the providence of God was uspd to help liquidate the debts on the two institutions. Dr. Talbot presented the need to his radio listeners who combined their sacrificial g ifts with those of the members of the Church and Institute and Chris­ tians of other affiliations and so, under God, the testimony at 6th
