2026-27 Pathway Planning Guide

HIGH SCHOOL PATHWAY PLANNING

2026 BENTONVILLE SCHOOLS

Student Success Planning Process Attend 8th Grade Tours In late December each junior high will take 8th grade students on tours of zoned high schools. Schedule SSP Appointment with a School Counselor By January 10 each year 8th graders receive directions and links to schedule an SSP. The appointment will be one hour on the high school campus in January, February, or March. Receive the Course Catalog Students in grade 8 will receive a course catalog to take home to parents in early January. Review the catalog and review our Welcome to High School website at BentonvilleK12.org. Attend Parent University Parent University is offered in early January each year. Families in any grade level are welcome to attend and get preliminary information about high school opportunities. More than 12 informational sessions are held on a range of topics and display tables are available to learn about career pathways. Please attend the event at either high school. Staff from both buildings will be present at both events. Attend the Appointment The 8th grade student and one or more guardians should attend the one hour appointment at the high school. Bring the course catalog and any career interest inventory or academic record information that you wish to bring. The student will receive a pass for an excused absence. Review Interests Review your career interest inventories completed in 8th grade and other advisory classes. Review Academic Strengths Review your academic strengths for choosing accelerated learning opportunities. Review Academic Deficits Review your academic deficits for planning academic supports and intervention programs.

#9 Choose Your Core Pathway Choose your core pathway for Pre-AP, AP, IB, and other core courses. #10 Choose Your Elective Pathway Interests

Choose your elective interests. See the pathway charts in the Pathway Planning brochure. See detailed course descriptions in this catalog. These may be your career interests or hobby interests. Choose an interest where you can show commitment to some individual program while in high school. See sample plans at the back of the course catalog. Students may change pathways or explore more than one pathway, but a long-term commitment to at least one high school pursuit is advantageous to the subsequent college or career search.

Arkansas Student Success Plans relate to legislation in AR Act 930 of 2017 and Act 237 of 2023.

Career Pathways

Career pathways are a defined sequence of related courses that build in complexity and culminate in certifications and distinctions. Completing a series of courses in a pathway allows a student to show persistence to a goal, academic perseverance, and endurance. Students who are engaged in career pathways are more likely to focus on subjects that are relevant to their lifetime hobbies and career interests. Increased interest in courses leads to increased academic success. We are proud to offer at least 44 pathways with 9 in the advanced studies and the classics, 4 in visual and performing arts, and 26 in our premier Career Studies and Ignite Professional Studies programs. These pathways allow students to earn a “completer” cord (academic regalia for commencement ceremonies). The Arkansas Department of Career and Technical Education (DCTE) designates some pathways as H 2 because they correspond with Higher Wage fields and High Demand industries in our Arkansas economy. The ADE DESE, DCTE, State Chamber of Commerce, and related economic groups may change or update this list of H 2 fields regularly. Earning a credential of value (certification) in an H 2 pathway will qualify for a Diploma with Merit in the new Arkansas Success Ready Pathway to a Diploma program.
