How the L eague S tarted This work o f Gospel distribution among the children started in New York City in the fall o f 1922. A small group o f people were led by the Lord to see what they could do to reach the children o f that great city with the Scriptures. They met with unimagined success and their work grew and expanded until now it includes nearly 300 centers in 38 states and in Canada. In each of these centers there is a prayer band which meets regularly to engage in. prayer for the Lord’s blessing on the children who read the little Gospels. Each center also has a “ local secretary”- (adult) who is in charge o f the distribution o f the Gospels. A D istinctly C hildren ’ s E nterprise While the work is carried on under adult supervision, it is distinctly a children’s enterprise. It began among children, and during the six years o f its history, children have done by far the greater part o f the actual distribution o f Gospels and Testaments. A boy or girl o f ten or eleven years can get many children to read the Bible when an older person could influence only a few. For example, a boy o f twelve years, near Trenton, N. J,, krone school year enlisted over 100 o f his classmates in the league, •giving each a Gospel o f John. He gave them the different Gospels as they were needed, and was able to award Testa ments to over 90 who finally completed the reading of the four books. Many o f these children later accepted Christ as their Saviour at.group meetings held for the league members in homes and a near-by church. 27,000,000 C hildren W ithout C hrist Jesus said, “ It is not the will o f your Father which is in heaven, that one o f these little ones should perish” (Matthew 18:14). And yet so-called'Christian America has some twenty-seven million of, them growing up with out Christ and without any Christian education which can point them to Him. That is why the School-Bag Gospel League came into being. W e believe that the least of these “ little ones” must have the Bread o f Life, and that God’s people are responsible for getting it to them. Our heavenly Father does not will that they should perish. But they will surely perish unless they receive Christ. And they cannot receive Christ unless Christ’s people tell them about Him. We, the Christian people o f Amer ica, are debtors to place a portion o f God’s Word in the hands of every child who can read it. Then we must fol low that Word with believing prayer, and God will fol low it with the gracious, renewing influences o f His Holy Spirit. P ray D efin itely for T h is W ork I f you cannot be a secretary, you can help by the min istry o f intercession. Believing prayer started this league and has given it good success even until now. Pray for the office force, pray that financial needs may be met (the League never makes any appeals for funds, and is wholly dependent on voluntary contributions), that new fields may be opened, willing workers found to enter this whitened harvest field, and that (above all) the boys and girls in reading the Word may be so led by the Holy Spirit that saving faith in Jesus Christ shall be the happy result. H ave Y our C hildren J oin Have your boys and girls over nine years old join the league at once. Write to the league headquarters (113 Fulton St., New York ) for free literature. Get two sets. Give one set to your minister and tell him about the league. Give the other set to a Sunday-school teacher. Try to interest them in the league.

Doings of the 4 A’s Atheists are sending out a new circular entitled : “ God less Evolution.” This purports to give “ the proofs of evolution” and sets forth the old exploded arguments of “ useless organs,” “man-made species,” “ missing links,” and “ natural selection.” See D. J. Whitney’s, article in this issue. * * * * Bible in the Balances— this is the title o f another cir cular being sent to our young people by the 4 A ’s. This alleges many contradictions in the. Bible and points out “ absurdities” o f biblical teaching. According to this circular, the Bible is an unsafe moral guide. Had you ever thought of that? W e should expect to find the majority o f our criminals the product o f the Sunday school. Sjc ijc * * Ouch ! The 4 A ’s sends a letter to its members saying: “ Religion has won. President Smith has been fined $100 for ‘annoying’ the Rev. John Straton by mail. Fol lowing St. Paul, who lied for the glory o f God, Dr. Stra ton supported by a new witnesS— A . H. Utley, the father o f Uldine, the child evangelist:—swore falsely that he had asked Mr. Smith not to send literature. The three Cath olic judges, Healy, Mclmerney, and Direnzo, accepted their testimony in preference to that o f an Atheist. The trial was most unfair.” Just imagine those Catholic judges favoring John Roach Straton, one o f the ring-leaders of the anti-Cath- olic movement o f New York City! Unfair trial! Why should not these Atheists be allowed to annoy everyone with their blasphemous literature ? A letter just received by the managing editor says: “ Your Saviour-God, was a hobo in Palestine.” Any move to put a stop to such annoyance is “ unfair” ! $ $ $ $ * I ' HE “ School-Bag Gospel League” is a movement to ~ place the Word o f God in the hands o f the boys and girls o f America and to lead them, through the reading of the Word, to faith in Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Any child from 9 to 17 years of age may join the league by accepting and agreeing to read that wonderful little book, “ The Gospel o f John.” When the reading o f this book is completed, it is to be handed to some other child. In this way a new member is secured. A fter the mem ber has finished John, he reads, in succession, Luke, Mark, and Matthew. When he has completed these four books, the League awards him a very attractive “ School-Bag” New Testament, which is retained as his permanent pos session and sign of membership in the League. These books are all given out free o f charge and without any distinction based on race, creed, or color. School Bag Gospel League Line Up the Boys and Girls Now1
