and then returned home and taught her day by day what he had just learned from the evangelists and so they had both become whole-hearted followers of the Lord. A ged W oman C omes I nto L ight Mrs. Chen, aged seventy-five years, had been away from her home for some time on a visit to one o f her married daughters. During her absence, her husband and grandson began going to the Biola Evangelistic Band headquarters. After a number o f interesting visits there they both put their trust in Jesus. On her return to her home Mrs. Chen noticed the great change in the lives of her husband and grandson; moreover, her husband tfegan at once to teach her about Jesus and urged her to put her trust in Him. Although Mrs. Chen had been brought up in a heathen home, and had spent her seventy-five years in the atmosphere o f idolatry, the Holy Spirit began His gracious work in her heart and before long she joined her husband in the Christian life. She said to our evan gelists: “ Formerly I was thoroughly devoted to heathen fasting and to the worship of idols. I came to know that fasting was useless and gave it up, and now that I have heard the Gospel I realize that we should not worship idols but should worship the one true God, and we should believe in Jesus Christ, for He died on the cross to save men from their sins. I have therefore determined to be lieve in Jesus to save me from my sins and to give me eternal life.” Is that not a wonderful testimony to come from that aged woman who only a couple of months before had never even heard o f the Lord Jesus Christ? “ I thank Thee, O Father, Lord o f heaven and earth, that Thou didst hide these things from the wise and under standing, and didst reveal them unto babes.” A W hole F am il y S aved Livinjg up on the side o f the mountain were Mr. and Mrs. Shih. The husband had been an inquirer for some time and had at last accepted Christ as his Saviour, but his wife opposed him bitterly. Whenever our evangelists went to their home she would look very angry and treated them very rudely. Sometimes when She saw them coming she would hide away in another room. In spite of her early opposition, little by little she came under the influ ence of the Gospel arid her whole attitude changed. One day our evangelists went up to their house to paste up some Gospel posters. Mr. Shih happened to be away, but Mrs. Shih, instead o f becoming angry or hiding, gave them a hearty welcome and assisted them in every pos sible way in pasting up the Gospel posters. She had really surrendered her life to Christ. Mrs. Shih’s mother, a woman sixty-four years of age, was visiting her at that time, and she was amazed at the great change Christ had made in that home, and as a result of what .she Saw there, she, too, gave her heart to Him. She said: “ I have been an enthusiastic worshiper of idols, seeking forgiveness of sin, and salvation, but now you have taught me that Jesus alone is the Saviour o f sinners. Then, too, I have seen the wonderful peace and joy that have come into this home since my daughter and her husband have believed in Jesus; therefore I have determined to believe in Jesus with my whole heart.” Dear" friends, what kind o f witnesses are we for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ? Are our daily lives bearing a testimony for. Him that is leading men and women to Himself?, Are joy and peace so manifest in our lives that others feel that they must get in touch with the Source of all joy and peace, even Jesus Christ?

STORIES OF OUR N D U R I N G H Y M N S

i

“My Jesus, I Love Thee” E often sing this hymn of devotion, but how few know anything of its history! Its author was a Canadian whose modesty caused him to let it appear in a hymn book only with the understanding that it would be anonymously. This was in the year o f 1862. As it was

copied into other hymnals, some attributed it to Dr. A . J. Gordon, who composed the tune to which it is sung. The words, it has since been learned, were written by William J. Featherstone, a boy of 16 years who was sin cerely religious. In his school days he was given to writ ing poetry, usually along religious lines. His little hymn,, “ My Jesus, I Love Thee,” was sent to his aunt. She highly praised his lines and wrote him that she felt they should be published. So they passed from one hand to another until they found their way into the hands of Dr. A. J. Gordon, who wrote the familiar tune we now use. When the Moody and Sankey hymn book appeared, the authdr’s name was still unknown. Mrs. Wilson, the aunt referred to above, while living in Los Angeles, re called her nephew had written the lines, for she had treasured the original copy. The story is told o f a talented young actress who was once passing along a street in a large city, when she saw a sickly girl lying on a couch just within the half-open door o f a dwelling. She paused, hoping to bring the girl a word of cheer. The sick girl, a devoted Christian, by her heaven-lit countenance and beautiful testimony, led the actress to think seriously o f the claims o f Christ. She soon became a Christian, and told her father, leaider of a theater troupe, that she wished to leave the stage. He tried to, dissuade her, and she consented to fill just one published engagement. When the curtain arose that night, she stepped to.the front and read the lines:

“ My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine. For Thee all the follies of sin I resign.

My gracious Redeemer, My Saviour art Thou, I f ever I loved Thee, My Jesus, ’tis now.”

She left the audience in tears and never appeared on the stage again. Her father was later led to Christ through her influence and they served the Lord together in evan gelistic work.
