DUNVEGAN | The crack of muskets and the roar of artillery will echo across the grounds of the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan when Crown Forces clash with American troops Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22. Military re-enactors and heritage presenters from Ontario, Québec and New York also plan a range of traditional activities throughout the village, including infantry and artillery drills, cavalry exercises and a novel portrayal of a seaman’s life. There will be fur traders, First Nations, open-fire cooking, rope making, early 19 th -Century quilting, a daily fashion show of period clothes and other historical demonstrations. “We are pleased how our War of 1812 Battle of Glengarry Weekend has grown over the past four years thanks to capable, colourful participants sharing their knowledge with curious visitors,” said museum curator Jennifer Black. “Canadian history will be living in every corner of the village, culminating each day in an afternoon skirmish recreating a piece of the War of 1812.” War of 1812 heritage runs deep in Glengarry County. The 1 st and 2 nd Glengarry Regiments belonged to the Sedentary Militia. This is the home the Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles, which was taken on the army establishment in August 1812 and saw service in the St. Lawrence Valley, Niagara and Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) in the Northwest. Although the original Glenswere disbanded in 1816, the re-enacted regiment regularly participates in the weekend. New this year, the 19th Light Dragoons plan on-field tactical demonstrations each morning and will join the afternoon battles. Although the 19th was the only British cavalry unit to serve in Canada during the war, Captain Richard Duncan Fraser commanded the Provincial Light Dragoons in the Eastern District of Upper Canada.
