A Builder’s Story “Treat the customer like family.”

Don Horton started with nothing more than a passion for people and a vision of building and selling homes. As a man of drive, determination, and commitment, he took that vision and convinced a banker to give him the loan he needed to build his first house—a story he’d share for the rest of his life. He ran his business with complete dedication and selflessness from that very first day in 1978. He walked the job site as a builder, scheduled vendors as an operations manager, changed shirts to become a sales agent, and treated every customer, employee, vendor partner, and broker agent like family. These humble beginnings forever remained an important principle of Don’s character and the company itself, even as we grew and changed. If you ever tried to tell Don (“DR,” as known by employees) that the success of this company was because of him, he would always respond the same way: “No, it’s because of our people.” DR’s culture and values run through our entire organization. We wouldn’t be where we are today without that dedication and care from so many people—including DR himself. It’s knowing that what we do matters and striving to live up to our very lofty title every single day. His story is our story.
