Reporting to the Assistant Director - Capital Development & Project Delivery, the Senior Project Manager (Design) will take the lead role in the design and project management of the University’s capital projects across a mixed-use Estate portfolio of research and teaching facilities, student residences, social and hospitality space, sports facilities and commercial space. To lead on the commissioning, briefing and management of external consultants appointed to work on capital projects.

• To lead on the commissioning, briefing and overseeing of external consultants appointed to work on capital projects.
• Deputise for the Assistant Director as required and therefore taking responsibility for reporting to the Senior Management Team; developing and maintaining relationships with internal/external partners; and representing the University for the Estates Department as required.
• To lead the design team on the delivery of estate reconfiguration and improvement projects, working closely with stakeholders to ensure requirements are met. • To ensure that competent cost and feasibility advice is provided to the University in developing user briefs for business cases, to ensure that all briefs reflect the University’s requirements and can be successfully translated into value for money facilities.
• Support the Assistant Director - Capital Development in the development, delivery and periodic review of the Estates Strategy.
• Working with the Assistant Director of Capital Development to design strategies for the future development of the estate in support of the University’s plans and priorities. • Ensuring the University’s commitments to sustainability are realised both within the Department’s own operations and more widely across all areas of University activity, working with academic and professional services colleagues as appropriate. • Actively contribute to the work of the Estates and Commercial Services Senior Management Team and take responsibility for cross-divisional initiatives and performance.
• Establishing project objectives, needs and budget.
• To lead on the development of conceptual, feasibility, outline and detailed design proposals and drawings.
• To ensure drawings are all produced on AutoCAD and/or BIM e.g. Revit.
• Lead on the preparation of specifications for materials and finishes.
• Co-ordinating the design team including service engineers, surveyors etc., to ensure all necessary project information is produced in a timely fashion.
• Represent the University in relevant national and regional networks and on associated professional bodies.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity will be recognised by a bi-annual Performance and Development Review (PDR) discussion.
Special Conditions The role holder will be required to travel between sites from time to time in a cost- effective manner, which may be through the use of a car. To be committed to working with the University to further improve the carbon footprint/environmental issues.

The postholder will be employed by Staffordshire University Services Limited. Staffordshire University Services Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Staffordshire University which recruits and provides both academic and professional support staff to the University. You will be subject to Staffordshire University’s policies and procedures and will be eligible to participate in the Staffordshire University Pension Scheme.

Selection Criteria Description
Previous experience of working in Higher Education.

Educated to degree level in Architecture or allied profession with professional qualifications and a member of ARB, RIBA, RICS (preferred). Minimum of 5 years’ post professional qualification experience and experience of successfully leading a design team of professional staff in a design consultancy practice or property services organisation. An in-depth knowledge of public procurement and EU procurement law to ensure compliance. Ability to lead design projects from conception to completion and producing detailed design drawings for tender and contract administration utilising the current JCT Suite of Contracts. Experience of successfully managing construction tenders and commissioning specialist construction design services. Experience of good sustainability practice, reducing carbon in design, construction and use and working towards Zero Net Carbon objectives on all projects where practicable. Extensive practical experience and relevant technical knowledge in delivering successful capital projects and programmes of work on time and to budget. Ability to prioritise complex and often conflicting project demands ensuring appropriate risk management techniques are implemented. Ability to communicate complex information to a range of audiences and stakeholders effectively using a variety of mediums. Ability to use industry standard design software i.e. Autocad, Revit etc. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and influence at all levels, both internally and externally. Excellent organisational skills with experience of managing multiple programmes of work with competing deadlines and challenging budgets.
