50 Years of Kappa League

KAPPA LEAGUE SPOTLIGHT

Through the years, with the lead- ership of talented and diverse Kappa League Directors, our programming has grown from reaching students both locally, in the Greater Houston Area, and regionally, throughout the South- west. Kappa League participants have also been featured in local newspapers, magazines, and televised on local news segments. Through the collective planning efforts of program directors and Kappa Leaguers we have been fortunate to expose our Kappa League students to the First National Kappa League conference, multiple Province Kappa League conferences held in different cities within the Southwestern Province, various cultural experiences, an Annual College Tour, community service events, and etiquette training, to name a few.” In one parent's example, “My son, Brice, was introduced to Kappa League as a high school freshman through a friend that is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. I was looking for a mentoring pro- gram for young men. My son was an A/B student, an athlete and he played in the band. However, he had been identified on the autism spectrum at the age of three, so he was extremely introverted and had a difficult time making new friends and adjusting to new situations,” E. Doyle, Brice's mother. “As a single mother, I knew that there were things that I could not teach him. By the first six months in KL he had created a bond with young men from different backgrounds that all had the same goal, to be great. He was mentored by men/advisors who were successful in their careers and their communities that looked like him. They were positive role models that set the ex- pectations for the young men very high.” “Brice has learned etiquette training, accumulated countless hours of com- munity service, college readiness and financial literacy training, team building and gained confidence and leadership by being a part of this brotherhood. College was always the expectation for Brice but participating in Kappa League gave him the necessary motivation that garnered him 11 college acceptances and numer-

ous scholarships. To date, he has com- pleted his freshman year on the Dean’s List at Hampton University. He contin- ues to use the tools and qualities he de- veloped as a member of Kappa League, which he applies now as a member of the National Hampton Alumni Scholars Program, Student Support Services/Ron- ald McNair Scholars Program, and as a Student Support Services Peer Men- tor. I am forever grateful to the men/ advisors of Kappa League for the time, love, and dedication that they pour into these young men. I am thankful for the support they have given and continue to

give Brice. The program is a huge part of his success.” The HAC Kappa League Program has also been recognized and awarded on the Provincial and National Levels for its work with developing its young men. It is our prayer that the Houston Alumni Chapter Kappa League Program continues to grow into a more diverse program and expand its reach to even more students. The HAC Kappa League looks for- ward to another 50 year and beyond and helping to mold young men to become our future leaders.
