KAPPA LEAGUE CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT
San Fernando-San Clarita (CA) Alumni Chapter Kappa League is a Stellar Student-Focused Program
By Kevin Burnett
The San Fernando-San Clarita (CA) Alumni Chapter works to instill the seven phases of Kappa League into its curriculum. The Kappa League program is well-known throughout the area due to its consistent visibility and comprehensive involvement of chapter members with the Kappa Leaguers as well as their community service efforts throughout the region.
T he San Fernando-Santa Clarita Kappa League (SFSC) is a young rapidly rising Kappa League program. In its pro- gram's first four years, the program has earned two Western Province Guide Right Chapter of the Year awards, two Guide Right Director of the Year awards, and only the second national Guide Right award earned by the West- ern Province. SFSC Kappa League has been innovative and at the forefront in Southern California. SFSC started out of an elementary school with 11 young men, since that time they have grown to 28 in the program. Last summer SFSC Kappa League hosted the inaugural Southern Califor- nia Regional Kappa League Conference held on the campus of California State University, Northridge. Kappa League chapters across Southern California stayed on campus and participated in a wide range of activities from learning
about cybersecurity, sexually transmitted infections, cybersecurity, to university/ greek life. The culmination of this inau- gural event involved a co-ed dance, after a Teen Summit style conversation on mental health, with local Sigma Gamma Rhoers and Delta Gems. The confer- ence was the idea of Brother Anthony Lee. Brother Lee explained, “After the 2018 National Kappa League Confer- ence in North Carolina, I talked with Brother Kevin Burnett. We discussed a SoCal conference, and he said, I know we could do this. I made a commitment not knowing how it was going to happen. But I think everybody left the National Kappa League Conference motivated for Kappa Leaguers that attended from California. I was excited to see that there was over 300 young men through- out the country. They conference gave our Kappa Leaguers a chance to see Kappa League on a bigger scale.” SFSC Kappa League has hosted a
college planning conference and played a major role in the annual Penny Lane Centers Christmas Boutique, where disadvantaged children get Christmas gifts free of charge. Penny Lane Cen- ters is an organization that has offices across Southern California. They deal with at-risk youth, transitional youth, and transitional families. Kappa League has also done backpack giveaways in conjunction with Penny Lane provid- ing youth notebooks, pencils, and other school supplies inside backpacks. SFSC Kappa Leaguers learned about the election process through Get Out the Vote (GOTV) activities with Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education (SCOPE) Los Angeles. SCOPE LA does community empower- ment, specifically for the Black commu- nity. SFSC Kappa League got a chance to participate in their program. They were educated on the political issues and trained on door to door canvassing.
