6 to 14, and basketball teams for boys and girls ages 6 to 18. The program is an integral part of Hampton City’s Parks and Recreation Department. Brother Blunt has an innate ability to glean the very best character, effort and perfor- mance from young people. That per- sonal attribute blossomed as he worked with those kids. He would later gradu- ate from the Midget team to the Junior team (ages 13 & 14), where he helped lead them to the Hampton City Cham- pionship. It wasn’t long after that, that he would be hired as the Junior Varsity coach at his high school alma mater, where he is an English and Special Education special education teacher. A year after taking over the junior varsity team, he became defensive coordinator for a varsity team that would win four consecutive state championships. At the Junior Varsity level his acute focus on academics and character build- ing not only bore fruit on the football field, but also in the classroom as well. The term student-athlete took on a heightened significance under his rein. Unbeknownst to Brother Blunt at the time, was the significant role that this organizational mindset would play in his future. His success led to his selection as the Phantom’s interim Head Varsity Coach in 2012 and their Head Coach in 2013. During his eight-year tenure as varsity coach, Brother Blunt amassed a record of 84 wins and 17 losses while winning five district championships, 3 regional championships and one state championship. He’s been named three- time District Coach of the Year and All-Conference Coach three times. But most importantly, his introduction of a more rigorous focus on academics while coaching at the junior varsity level, has yielded great dividends to many young men who have been blessed to have had him in their lives as a coach, mentor and father-figure. Because of his guidance and support, to date,131 of his student-
athletes have received college scholar- ships. Brother Blunt is an active member of and constant contributor to the chapter’s Guide Right Committee. He is married and has three children; two sons and a daughter. Both sons have been participants in the chapter’s athletic program. His oldest son is currently an active member of the chapter’s Kappa League.
