Birmingham Kappa League's Mr. J'Eron Pruitt Awarded $1.5 Million in Scholarships J ’Eron Alexander Pruitt, Class of 2020, graduated as Salutatorian By Anthony Hayes
from Holy Family Cristo Rey High School with an astound ing 4.2 GPA. Not only was J’Eron awarded the prestigious title of Salutatorian but he was also awarded $1.5 million in scholarships. He prides himself as a dedicated, hard- working, forward thinking, role model for many young men who have matricu- lated through Holy Family Cristo Rey High School, the Birmingham Kappa League, and the city of Birmingham. Some of the many awards J’Eron has received includes Mu Alpha Theta – National Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Social Studies Honor Soci- ety, National Society of High School Scholars, Fox 6 Kids and Jobs – Sum- mer Intern Draft Recipient for McWane Science Center, Mr. Junior, Mr. Holy Family Cristo Rey, Captain of the Varsity basketball team and Honor Roll Student during each semester of his high school career. J’Eron has been a dedicated member and leader of the renowned Birming- ham Kappa League for the last four years and was elevated to the position of President, leading a program with over 60 current members and over 130 past members. “I hold all members as well as myself to our highest level of potential and encourage strict focus on our grades, attendance, and discipline weekly through leading by example. I maintain an open level of communica- tion with all parents ensuring we work as a team to guarantee educational success and make plans for future advancement after high school.” With encouragement and direction from his trusted advisor and mentor,
Mr. Anthony “Pops” Hayes, J’Eron has been resolute in serving his community. The Selma Bloody Sunday Reenactment walk/march, monthly Feed the Home- less and Clothing Drive, MLK Day of Service, DHR custody toy drive and give away, Warmth of the Heart home- less blanket giveaway, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk, National College Fair, National Polemarch’s Walk, Back- to-school backpack give away to DHR children, Orientation of new member of Birmingham Kappa League, Sickle Cell Walk, Sound the Alarm – Smoke detector installation, and Men’s Day of Leadership in the Future are just a few of the community service projects he has helped organize and participated in. When asked why he chose Kappa League, J’Eron enthusiastically said, “I chose Kappa League because Kappas’ mentor”. “I have a mother, father, grand- mother and large family that support me in everything I do, but I also have a Pops. Pops has taught me a lot over these four years. I’ll never forget him or the time he’s invested in all of us to
make us better men.” Thanks to Pops, Mr. Anthony Hayes, and the Kappa League of Birmingham advisors young men have participated in “Which Fork is Mine?” where members are trained on dining etiquette and proper table manners; High Stakes Test Taking Skills; “What Color are Your Socks?” a training course on professional dress, shoe types, and how to tie a tie; Money Manage- ment and “Umm, Ahh, Well, Like, You Know what I Mean” where Kappa League members are trained on public speaking with tips and techniques on how to write and deliver a speech. The vast amount of scholarships J’Eron received has not stopped him dili- gently seeking additional scholarships. He has declined opportunities at several universities to see his dream come true. He has chosen to attend the historic Tuskegee University in the Fall where he will pursue a double major in Architec- ture and Agribusiness. His dream is to, one day, be an architect that will create a modernized living environment and sustainable community for generations to come.
