KAPPA LEAGUERS ACHIEVEMENT SPOTLIGHT

select Guide Right scholarship award- ees). As a Guide Right scholarship recipient, myself, it was quite rewarding to be on the other side awarding scholar- ships to black and brown high school se- niors matriculating to college. It was like everything came full circle. Being able to give back in that way is one of my great- est and proudest accomplishments. Q: I know you like to travel. How many countries are you at now and what have you learned from all your travels? A: I am at 48 and COVID-19 is not making it easy to get to 50! Jokes aside, it has never been a numbers game for me. I travel because I truly enjoy the im- mersive experience of being in a foreign country, city, or town and exploring new cultures and foods, interacting with lo- cals, and learning how much there is out there that I don’t know. While a few of my travels were spurred by classes I was taking, most of it was simply planning trips during my gaps of free time with classmates. Traveling was not a focus during my childhood. I did not have my first passport until I was 25. We can say I was playing a bit of “catch up”, ha.

Q: How are you adjusting to the

pandemic? A: I feel like the pandemic has made us as a society get back to the basics. Our culture can be so go-go-go and always focus on the ‘next’ thing when sometimes it is good to stop and smell the roses. I try practicing gratitude daily and being more present in the moment. While work has not lightened up much, I aim to make productive use of my free time. I have been cooking a lot more – I started making bread! I also have a pas- sion for natural wine. As a side hobby, I co-built a brand called Vine Vybes (@ VineVybes on IG) where we focus on natural wine and good music. Wine has always had a certain stigma and now it is slowly starting to permeate Black culture which I love. Between Bron drinking vino on The Shop, D Wade having his own line of wines, and movies like Un- corked on Netflix, wine can be enjoyed by everyone, including our community.
