50 Years of Kappa League

2020 VIRTUAL CRWLC

‘skirt’ them. The renegades out there to do whatever they want, often leading to personal injury during MTA. Make no mistake about it brothers. Plaintiffs' lawyers know our rules as well or bet- ter than we do, and they are extremely skilled at pointing out every instance where we failed to follow them! Brothers you are going to have some very in-depth discussions about these and other items, I emphasize and stress the importance of the C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference. I also stress the importance of taking the information that you are going to learn today back to your respective chapters and talk about it throughout the year.” Brother Odom, discussed the vision for the conference which was a return “Back to basics of officer training to ensure chapter officers and brothers are fully equipped to execute their duties, roles and responsibilities as officers and brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi in a post George Floyd World.” He also discussed 16 th Grand Polemarch Charles Rodger Wilson and provided brothers with the purpose of the CRWLC.

The Grand Polemarch is saying that the claims we have result from noncom- pliance with rules. Some of that results from the failure to report…what I like to stress and really commit, particularly to our undergraduate chapters and under- graduate chapter officers is this, if you as a chapter officer will pledge to and faithfully enforce the rules and report noncompliance, I will guarantee you that your charter will always be in place… that your charter will never be re- voked…there will always be the continu- ing presence of the flag of Kappa Alpha Psi on your chapter because in instances where there are breaches of conduct and breaches of rules, the threshold ques- tion that we want, both the college or university and the fraternity to deter- mine is this…were the rules broken by individuals or was there institutional involvement in the misconduct?...the NCAA calls it the lack of institutional control, is it just a renegade out there doing something or as the institution, do you know that this is way you are recruiting, do you know that this is what you are doing? Institutional control, I try to suggest where the officers are enforc- ing the rules and reporting everything they know and anything that happen is the result of some noncomplying person or individual and notably the chapter has a defense…Greek life is one of the benefits that helps colleges and universi- ties market to students. And, the Divine Nine is one of them. Going forward in our minutes, we want to ask does any- body know of anything reportable, are there violations of our rules that anybody knows about? Chapter minutes need to reflect who was present by a sign-in roster. Document attendance. Minutes should reflect that there is a hazing hot- line, minutes should reflect the schedule of events of the chapter and collateral entities. We need to be able to say and validate we have training on Title IX, sexual harassment and university rules.” Officer training followed, which in- cluded seven break-out sessions for the Polemarch/Vice Polemarch & Parliamen- tarian workshop led by Senior Grand

Vice Polemarch Linnes Finney, Jr., Esq., Junior Grand Vice Polemarch Evan R. Jackson and Parliamentarian Freddy Colston. A chapter Board Member work- shop was led by Alumni Grand Board Members Robert L. Jenkins, Jr., Esq. and Jwyanza B. Watt. The Keeper of Re- cords workshop was led by Southwest- ern Province Keeper of Records Mark A. Gallashaw, Sr. The Keeper of Exchequer workshop was led by the Grand Keeper of Records and Exchequer Rhen C. Bass, Sr., CPA and Western Province Senior Province Vice Polemarch K. Lynn Greer. The Strategus and Lt. Strategus workshop led by the Eastern Province Executive Administrator for Organiza- tional Effectiveness Joseph L. Wiggins. The Historian/Reporter workshop led by Grand Historian Kevin P. Scott while the Guide Right workshop was led the National Guide Right Chairman Kevin L. Burnett. The officer training break- out sessions were very well attended by officers and brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi. Post survey feedback overwhelm- ingly reflected the desire to engage in more training conferences like the 2020 CRWLC.

Polemarch/Vice Polemarch & Parliamentarian Workshop

Risk Avoidance Training

Brother Cleophus Thomas, Jr., Esq., General Counsel proffered notewor- thy insight regarding Risk Avoidance/ Risk Management to ensure members understood their responsibility and role to safeguard and protect Kappa Alpha Psi. “The Grand Polemarch has done an excellent job of introducing the topic and reminding us of the risks and what we are trying to address and also re- minding us of the fact that what is often called to the attention of the public and the courts is not our inability to have in place appropriate rules and safeguards, but our inability to follow them. As we open up the presentation today and look at some of the revisions and tweaks to our policies, we open up with the sug- gestion and mandate, that going forward in our minutes, we include certain things on a regular basis.

During the Polemarch/Vice Polemarch & Parliamentarian workshop, Senior Grand Vice Polemarch Finney stated, “The 26 th Grand Polemarch often expressed the highest honor in Kappa an individual can be granted is to be elected to become their leader.” “And, each of you as Polemarchs have been elected leaders of your chapter, congratulations.” This workshop fostered significant inquiry regarding the term Polemarch and leadership. The workshop covered the frater- nal history and evolution of the term Polemarch, role and responsibility of the office of Polemarch including the triangles of success (Knowledge, Skills & Attitude), duties of the office. Brother Finney stressed that the “role and re- sponsibility of Polemarch has its origins
