Junior Endeavor Topics By J. K. H. S.

Sunday, A pril 26.—P salm 8: 1-12. The Gains From Going to Church 1. "Church.” In New Testament times the common place of worship was called a “synagogue,” which means “a coming to gether.” It is said that there were 400 synagogues in Jerusalem alone. 2. Ancient Custom. Meetings were held every Sabbath and on some week days. Jesus was a regular attendant (Mark 10: 1) ; and so was Paul (Acts 17:2). The Holy Spirit in the Word (Heb. 10:25) urges us to go to church, for other’s sake as well as our own; and in view of the nearness of “the end.” (The leader should have these texts read arid point their ap plication.) 3. The Eighty-fourth Psalm. The place of worship is “amiable,” i. e., lovely (Psa. 133:1 )—v. 1. True believers love to wor ship there.—v. 2. Like weary birds they find home and rest there.—v. 3. They get a blessing there.—v. 4. They are made strong there.—v. 5. Their tears (their sor rows) are changed for a well of joy.— v. 6 (“Bacca” means “tears”). They grow stronger and stronger (spiritually).—v. 7. Their prayers are heard.—v. 8. They real ize God’s protection and presence.—v. 9. They find geat"profit; a day there is better than a 1000 among the ungodly.—v. 10. They miss “rio good thing.”—v. 11, and have the Happiness of them that trust the Lord. Of course we speak only of true Christians. 4. Other Gains. (1) It keeps us in the love of God (Jude 21). Those that do not love. God’s house do not love Him. (2) We meet (Matt. 18:20^ with the unseen Lord. (3) We learn the truth and are kept from unbelief. S.ee, (John 20:24-29) the case of Thomas. (4) We keep our word. See the Endeavor pledge. Of the Church we may. sing:

Sunday, May 3. The Beatitudes, V. Be Kind and Helpful to the Weak—5:7. CONSECRATION MEETING. 1. Mercy. Is kindness shown to such as do not deserve it of us; or to such as it is in bur power to harm; it is to spare pain to, or give relief to others, man or beast. Mercy is opposed to cruelty. 2. God is Merciful (Luke 6:36). He is kind to us who do not deserve it from Him. He is strong, we are weak. Think how wretched He could make us if He were c r i t e l . ■ 3. One of His Requirements. Find it in Micah 6:8, and Luke 6:36. 4. Showing Mercy. It is a mercy to man and beast to kill flies, but mercy to the flies not to mutilate them. We may show mercy to the least of creatures. The Chris tian poet Cowper said that he would not count as friend the man “Who needlessly sets foot upon a worm.” If we are merciful to the least we will be to the greater. 5. The Promise of Mercy: We all need mercy, but the promise of it is only to them who show mercy. Only such have a right to ask it. Another Poet put it, “That mercy I to others show; that mercy show to me.” “A merciful man is merciful to his beast,” runs the proverb, and merciful boys and girls will be so to birds, and kittens, and dogs; and to smaller boys and girls, strang ers, playmates, brothers and sisters. There is a merciful society called " The Humane Society, for the.Prevention of Cruelty to A n im a ls , and to helpless children. We should all join that society in our hearts and ways.. 6. Scripture Examples. Genesis 45:4, 5; 1 Sam. 30:11-13; 2 Sam. 3:8; Luke 10:25- 37; 23:39-42; Acts 9:3-5, 17-19. “Go thou and do likewise,” and be true.'children of the heavenly Father. See. what a blessed name. He, has (2 Cor. 1:3) . ,7. .What Those W ho. Show No Mercy May Expect (Matt. 18:28-33).

"Beyond my highest Joys I love her heavenly ways; Her sweet communion, solemn vows'; Her hymns of love and praise.”
