The sixteenth edition of the Procigar Festival, organised by the Dominican Cigar Producers' Association, welcomed over a thousand participants from some twenty countries. For almost a week of festivities, the pace was brisk: visits, tastings and eve- ning events, culminating in the White Party, followed one ano- ther without a break. It was an opportunity for professionals to meet up on the producers' land and share their knowledge and excellent moments with them. Since its creation in 1992, Procigar's aim has been to promote Dominican cigars, under the leadership of its President, Hendrick Kelner, nicknamed "Henke" (photo page 56, top), who recently handed the reins over. The Festival starts in La Romana, where aficionados can relax after their trip. The programme includes horse riding, a sea trip to Catalina Island and Pete Dye's Teeth of the Dog golf course at Casa Del Campo: one of the finest in the world. Developed on the rugged rocks of this Caribbean coastline, it is exceptional: 18 holes, including 7 along the sea, where the best professional and amateur golfers in the world meet; dinner at the Minitas Beach Club, hosted by the Grupo de Maestros de la Tabacalera deGarcía. La Romana is home to the Tabacalera de García, the largest cigar factory in the world, which organised a guided tour of its facilities, and then the festival-goers left for Santiago de los Caballeros, the Dominican cigar capital. A bag was waiting for them on their arrival in Santiago, containing a limited edition cigar box, an ashtray, a cigar cutter, a lighter and other cigar accessories. There, they were spoilt for choice to discover the factories and tobacco fields of Quesada Cigars, La Aurora, General Cigar Dominicana, Tabacalera Palma, De Los Reyes Cigars, Tabacalera A.Fuente, PDR Cigars, Casa Carrillo, La Flor récompenses et par la traditionnelle vente aux enchères de caves, achalandées de cigares fantastiques, qui à atteint un montant de 530.000 $ au profit d’œuvres caritatives.
