EUROPEAN OAK by TERRAMAI
Two Grades. One Forest.
Every project asks for something slightly different— sometimes clean grain, other times character. That’s why our European Oak Collection is offered in two distinct grades: Prime and Natural. Both are sourced from a single forest in France and milled using traditional live sawn techniques. Our European Oak reveals something most flooring can’t: the complete story of the tree. From heartwood to sapwood, each 7” plank captures the full journey, creating floors that perform as beautifully as they age. Availble for QuickShip, our European Oak Collection is an uncompromising standard for quality, sustainability, and availability.
WHAT IS LIVE SAWN?
Live sawn milling is a centuries-old European technique that cuts straight through the log in one continuous pass—from the outer sapwood to the dense heartwood at the center. Unlike modern milling methods that slice logs into predefined cuts and discard what doesn’t fit the trend, live sawn preserves the entire story of the tree—its structure, strength, and natural character. The Europeans have long mastered this process. They begin by taking a square section from the center of the log, called a cant, and slicing it straight through—no sorting, no waste. Because their forests grow slowly and intentionally, the oak develops a tighter grain, resulting in exceptional stability and visual depth. The outcome is striking: a single 7” wide plank that reveals three distinct grain patterns in one continuous piece of wood - all three cuts in one plank. • Plain Sawn at the center, with flame-like cathedral arches • Rift Sawn to either side, offering clean, linear grain • Quarter Sawn at the edges, featuring medullary rays and subtle flecking This mixed grain character doesn’t just elevate design—it makes every board unique. There’s no manufactured repetition, no false uniformity. But live sawn milling is more than aesthetics. By using every part of the log, it minimizes waste, enhances durability, and offers an inherently more sustainable approach than conventional milling. Each board is milled for strength as much as style and performs exceptionally well in commercial environments where stability and longevity matter.

THE TERRAMAI DIFFERENCE
Our European Oak is harvested from a single forest in France with a long tradition of responsible forestry. By working directly with trusted partners at the source, we ensure every plank meets our standards for quality, traceability, and environmental integrity.
RESONSIBLE SOURCING
Our European Oak is certified responsibly sourced, ensuring it meets rigorous environmental and social standards from forest to finish. TerraMai Certification isn’t just a label—it’s a commitment to transparency and long- term environmental stewardship that goes beyond industry minimums.
A TEAM YOU CAN TRUST Not all oak is created equal—and not all advice is either. Relying on generic grading charts or generic specs often leads to mismatched expectations, especially with European Oak. Grain structure, milling method, finish clarity— these choices shape everything from performance to perception. When the questions get more complex, it helps to have people on your team with the experience to answer them.
