seated sipping ice cream sodas, the policeman asked, “Where is it you want to go ?” As Jimmy answered, a gap showed where he’d lost a tooth. “Out where there are streams to wade and Indians to stalk, where no one’ll ever say ‘Don’t !’ to me again.” “ There aren’t any more Indians to stalk out there now, but how’d you like to stalk bank robbers and train robbers as I’m doing?” Jimmy’s blue eyes w idened. “ Could I wear a uniform like yours ?” The policeman nodded, “ Just like this.” “Would my mother, my big sis­ ter, and my school teacher stop saying to me, ‘Jimmy, don’t do that!’ ?” “There’s no place in all the world where no one ever says ‘Don’t.’ It’s what you do when they say it that’s important. It can make you into a policeman with a uniform like this and a gun to carry, or it can make you into just a no-good tramp who is hungry and tired, with no place to sleep. How’d you like to start training today to be a police­ man?” “ Right now?” Jimmy asked in wonderment as his hand reached out timidly, almost reverently, to touch the shiny gold badge. The policeman drew nearer so Jimmy could run his fingers over the badge. His voice was low and confidential. “Here’s the secret. You go home and listen very care­ fully whenever anyone says ‘Don’t.’ There’s a right way and a wrong way. The wrong way makes a person mad, but the right way makes him want to do just what he is told. To become a good policeman, you have to know how to say it the right way. You have more opportunities to learn that than anyone I know. How about it?” Jimmy gave one long last suck at the straw in his soda, and then he slid off the stool.
