Natural Gas Safety

Natural Gas Safety Detecting a Leak

If you smell natural gas, call SaskEnergy’s emergency line at 1-888-700-0427 . Do not assume the issue has already been reported or someone else will call. Leave the area or home immediately. How do you detect natural gas? Follow your senses:

Nose

Eyes

• You cannot see natural gas • If there is vapour, ground frosting or significant brown vegetation, it could be an indication of a gas leak • Watch for bubbling in wet or flooded areas

• SaskEnergy adds an odour to natural gas so you can smell it • If you smell an odour, such as rotten eggs, sewer or skunk—it could be a gas leak

Carbon Monoxide Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless, tasteless and invisible gas that occurs through combustion, or the process of burning. Any fuel-burning appliance can cause CO build-up, including fireplaces, furnaces or car engines. Excessive amounts of CO will form when there isn’t proper ventilation or an adequate air supply. CO poisoning can happen to anyone. In order to stay safe, a CO alarm is recommended as it will alert you to danger before physical symptoms of CO poisoning can appear.

Natural Gas Safety

Planning a Dig Project Whether you’re planting a tree or undertaking a major construction project, there are important steps to follow when working near natural gas lines. Plan ahead and understand the work area and the location of underground utility lines as it can save you time, money, and help you avoid a dangerous situation. It’s your responsibility to ensure you are not digging or encroaching on natural gas facilities. Hitting a natural gas line, or creating an obstruction that doesn’t allow us to quickly access the gas line, can put you and your community at serious risk. Visit digsafesask.com for instructions on how to stay safe.

Encroachments

Gas Meter Safety

An encroachment happens when any item or structure, whether temporarily or permanently, extends over SaskEnergy’s infrastructure or facilities. This can include but is not limited to: • Decks • Garages and sheds • Fences • Trees, flower beds, ponds SaskEnergy’s Terms & Conditions of Service Schedule contains information on allowable conditions and the requirements when building above ground. SaskEnergy and its authorized contractors need to be able to access its infrastructure and facilities at any time. If you have an encroachment, you will need to remove the hazard or we will need to move or install a new natural gas line at your cost.

Always keep the meter accessible and keep the area clear. Gently remove any snow and ice and do not lean any objects against the meter. When a gas meter needs to be exchanged, you will receive a letter from SaskEnergy to book an appointment to replace the gas meter. If you notice that the gas meter is damaged, please contact us immediately at 1-888-700-0427 and speak to our Customer Service Representative.
