Psychological First Aid (PFA) Workshops: COVID-19 Frontline Leaders
To support our frontline leaders in supporting their team members, we are offering specialised PFA workshops which address potentially traumatic/ critical events including COVID-19, psychological distress, fatigue / injury within the NSLHD health workforce. Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence informed intervention/ approach designed to reduce the initial distress caused by critical/ traumatic events including impacts of a pandemic on individuals & communities. The training involves a presentation format with case studies, small group work and interactive sessions and selected role plays. The training seeks to present approaches that senior staff can utilise such as PFA and compassion/ resilience strategies/ practical flexible approaches to problem solve work related stressors to support those affected. The approach can assist with prevention of escalating symptoms & behaviours whilst identifying possible referral to other stepped care opportunities for HCWs.

Learning objectives: ✓ Increase confidence in translating knowledge of PFA core skills into action in the workplace. ✓ Utilise PFA and compassion/ resilience strategies to support those affected. ✓ Increase knowledge and understanding of different psycho/social responses to COVID and other critical events and the associated emotional, social impacts on those directly affected including, staff, patients/ clients and local communities. ✓ Build on the PFA skills and competencies to assist in responding to those experiencing distress, fatigue, burnout, trauma, loss, bereavement and other psychological impacts. ✓ Increase confidence in differentiating between what you as a manager can do to support your Team and individual Team members in distress and when to refer to employee assistance (EAP) / counselling, mental health provider ✓ Build on knowledge of self-care strategies and positive workplace environments
