In 1860, he owned real estate worth $3,500 and personal property worth $7,000. The latter amount probably represented the value of one slave he personally owned and his share of business property, store fittings, inventory and slaves. 16 Mack’s real estate was valued at $700 and personal property, $3,500. 17 The business owned three slaves, a female age 28, a male age 13 and a male age five. 18 If James and Mack were still business partners, that ended when Mack died from illness contracted during Confederate service at the end of 1861. 19 His place of burial is not known. James’s Confederate service record was not found.
