materials was his first cousin. 20 His younger brother served in an infantry regiment, 1861-1865, most of which he spent in the Signal Corps. 21 Mary D. and James had a second child before the war. Three followed during the war. 22 Two were born after the war. 23 James and his brother opened a mercantile business in the village after the war. A few years later, one of founder Elizabeth (Cooksey) Parks Byrd’s sons and one of Mary D.’s brothers joined the business as partners. 24 In addition to the mercantile business, James and his brother owned and operated a saw and grist mill. 25 “The town [Greenwood] is in a more prosperous condition than at any period since the war,” concluded the largest newspaper in the county, which assessed economic conditions in the early 1870s. The Bailey home was admired and among the “handsome dwellings of [Greenwood].” 26 It stood where the first county courthouse was built. A prominent local doctor built the home and swapped it with the Baileys for their home that he in turn gave to one of his daughters.
