In 1870 Frank was admitted to the state hospital with a history of EPILEPSY that staff noted had caused his insanity during the last year. 33 A few months later he was enumerated in the 1870 census of Richland County as an inmate in the asylum. 34 The next year, his father described him as “I DIOTIC and unable to take care of himself. He is now at the Lunatic Asylum at Columbia where I wish him to remain.” 35 As his father wished, Frank remained at the asylum for the rest of his life. In 1879, hospital records showed he was a patient. 36 In 1880, the census enumerator of patients indicated Frank was IDIOTIC not insane. 37 The executor of his father’s estate and Frank’s guardian paid for his care. 38 Frank died at the asylum in 1881. 39 He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery. 40 William M. Bailey, the second child, was born in 1859.
