insane “partially from birth but insanity has increased in last two years” and that Dixie’s problem was hereditary. 55 Asylum staff wrote “This patient has always been weak minded & was epileptic as a child. He has gradually during the last two years grown insane & became an annoyance to his neighbors. He is noisy, restless & wandering, delusional and incoherent.” 56 Through 1888 the executor paid Dixie’s expenses at the asylum. 57 Thirty-seven years, one month and seven days after he was admitted to the asylum Dixie was discharged to the S TATE T RAINING S CHOOL FOR THE F EEBLE - M INDED . At the time, his diagnosis was “not insane – imbecile.” 58 Dixie died at age 62 at the school less than a year later. 59 He was buried in Clinton Cemetery in Clinton. 60 Eugene James Bailey, the fourth child, was born in either 1863 or 1864, 61 making him about age seven when his father died and about age 10 when his mother died. 62 In 1880, when an aunt cared for him and his sister and brother, the enumerator erroneously made his sister older than he was. 63 Notably, he was long-lived, by far the longest of the Bailey children. 55 State Hospital Commitment Files, S190024, S.S.
