Bowden Joyce, Founding Mothers

Eugene was well educated. The executor of his father’s estate placed him with various teachers operating local private schools and in a military school in another part of the state. He later trained in dentistry with local dentists. 64 Instead of practicing private dentistry, Eugene chose to practice military dentistry. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in his late 20s and became a career soldier-dentist. He served 22 years, all very far from his South Carolina home. Texas, Hawaii and California were some of the places he was stationed. He served in the Spanish-American War and afterward was also stationed in the Philippines. 65
