Bowden Joyce, Founding Mothers

Early in 1849, Mr. and Mrs. Nichols announced Fuller Institute was the new name of Greenwood Female Academy, named after a prominent Baptist minister Rev. Richard Fuller, and the next session would start the first Monday in February. 9 An April 1 fire interrupted this session. The school building was destroyed. Rev. Chiles announced the session would continue at another location and appealed to the public for help and financial contributions. 10 At that point, the school had operated continuously under the direction of the same principals and in the same building for two full school years and part of a third. Undaunted by the fire, the trustees persevered. They built a larger and brick building on the same site and announced the next session would begin 15 January 1850 under the direction of Rev. Chas. A. Raymond. 11 However, turnover at the top began with Rev. Raymond’s tenure. During the next nine years, the names of four more principals are known: Miss M. Cornelia Pelot; 12 Rev. T.J. Pearce; 13 J.E.B. Evans M.D.; 14 and Miss Annie C. Gott. 15 Other principals possibly served during those years but their names are not known. The Edgefield Advertiser and The Abbeville Banner , the principal newspapers that carried news articles and notices about the school, did not mention Fuller Institute between 12 January 1854 and 15 December 1858. 9 “Fuller Institute, Greenwood S.C.,” The Abbeville (South Carolina) Banner , 20 January 1849, online archives (https://www.newspapers.com : 2 December 2020), p. 3, col. 3.
