H OLLYWOOD C EMETERY , R ICHMOND , V IRGINIA . Established in 1847, this garden cemetery, designed by Philadelphia’s architect John Notman, is located on the banks of the James River. It is the burial site of James Monroe, John Tyler and Jefferson Davis. Twenty-eight Confederate generals are interred here, more than any other cemetery in the country. About 18,000 Confederate soldiers also are buried here. After Arlington National Cemetery, Hollywood Cemetery is the second most-visited cemetery in the nation. H ODGES , S OUTH C AROLINA . A town in Greenwood County, South Carolina. It began in 1852 as a railroad stop called Cokesbury Junction, then Cokesbury Depot and finally Hodges, named after George Washington Hodges, brigadier general in the state militia, who lived nearby. Founded in 1855 by graduates of the Citadel, the military college of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. Closed during the Civil War, it was reopened in 1866, and permanently closed in 1909. The property was sold to the Episcopal Church Home for Children, formerly an orphanage. The organization is now called York Place and is supported by the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. It provides support services to children and families. M INI [ M INIÉ ] BALL . Named for its developer, Claude-Étienne Minié, this cylindrical bullet with a conical point was widely used during the American Civil War. The Minié ball was smaller than the diameter of a rifle barrel and could be easily loaded in combat. This allowed for a more widespread use of muzzle-loading rifles, giving them much longer range, better accuracy, and faster traveling projectiles than both smoothbore muskets with long barrels and rifled muskets.
