Bowden Joyce, Founding Mothers

II. Complementary Family Information Emily’s mother Elizabeth’s family, the Holliday family, appeared in the first census of the United States in Edgefield County. They had lived in the county before this date, possibly for some time. Elizabeth Holliday was born in 1788. 18 John Holliday probably was her father; her mother’s name is not known. 19 William Holliday whose surname was spelled Holloday in records probably was John’s older brother. William was a petit juror in Edgefield County in 1786 20 and appeared in the 1790 U.S. census of the county. 21 Where uncle William Holliday lived may help to better locate where Elizabeth was born and raised. Ambrose Edwards, my great-great-great-grandfather, was enumerated immediately after William in 1790. Ambrose was known to have lived in Edgefield County near Cambridge, a village in neighboring Abbeville County. 22 Cambridge was well known. Under its previous name, Ninety Six, it had been the seat of the backcountry district that pre-dated counties. 23 William apparently died before 1800 leaving Sarah, his widow, as head of household. Sarah’s household was enumerated eight households after John Holliday’s in the 1800 U.S. census of Edgefield District. The children in her 18 Membership application, Tallulah R.
