property also is not known. Abbeville County Probate Court does not have a file for him. Eliza married her stepbrother Milton quite likely after her father died. By 1840 they lived in the hamlet that would develop into Greenwood village. 19 Milton was a harness maker. He probably had apprenticed with his father. After his father died, in my estimation Milton ran the family business as early as age 15. In the 1850 U.S. population schedule, Milton appeared on the same page as a boot and shoemaker, a blacksmith, two cabinetmakers and a tailor. In the 1850 U.S. industry schedule, Milton was a harness maker. He said he worked alone and the raw material he used was leather. 20 In the 1850s Milton relocated the harness shop near the railroad depot. 21 Milton also was postmaster three times. His first term lasted only a few months in 1846. The next year he began a five-year term. During his first term and the early years of his second term, Woodville was the post office name. That changed to Greenwood during Milton’s second term. 22 Table, Greenwood Postmasters Eliza’s sister-in-law Emily Osborn very likely invited Eliza to join conversations about Methodist women in need of spiritual help she and her employer were having. Emily worked for Elizabeth Byrd who lived on Main Street, now East Cambridge Avenue. 23 Emily, Milton’s sister, also lived in the 19 1840 U.S. census, Abbeville District, South Carolina, p. 12 (penned), Mitton [Milton] Orsburn [Osborn]; digital image, Ancestry.com (access through participating libraries : 11 July 2018); citing FHL microfilm 0022508. 20 1850 U.S. census, Greenwood Village, Abbeville District, South Carolina, population schedule, p. 118B, dwelling 1814, family 1814, Milton Osborn; digital image, Ancestry.com (access through participating libraries : 24 April 2019); citing NARA microfilm publication M432, roll 848.
