In the Civil War, L.A. served in the Holcombe Legion, an infantry regiment. He enlisted in late December 1861 and was present on every muster roll 1862-1865 except for July 1863 when he was wounded. He was taken prisoner in Virginia, 1 April 1865, and held at Point Lookout, Maryland, where he took the oath of allegiance, 29 June 1865, and was released. The oath described him as 5 ft. 6 in. with brown hair, fair skin and blue eyes. 33 Gus, a farmer and life-long Methodist, married Mary Elizabeth Pinson 27 December 1870 34 probably in Abbeville County. She was born 28 April 1852 and died 12 January 1921. She and their infant son were also buried near her in-laws. 35 c. Mary Susan was born in 1849 and died after 1880. 36 d.
