land. 8 His will was proved 12 June 1798 but when he died is not known. Online sources only indicate possible burial places because no grave marker has been found. 9 James’s son George was Presbyterian. He was an elder in Greenville Presbyterian Church, founded only a few years after the Brownlees arrived in the colony. The Church is in Greenwood County. George married Sarah Caldwell. They were buried in the church’s cemetery. 10 Some Clinkscales families probably including Louisa Jane’s regularly attended a Methodist camp meeting. The campground was built about 1823 and named Smyrna. Tents enclosed three sides of the campground.
Wood posts were firmly set in the ground 2 or more feet with about 9 feet above ground, which were further supported by stout poles running on top of the posts from side to side of the tents: which were from 40 to 60 feet in length and 20 to 30 feet in width. . . . Tent-holders . . . [were] in part . . . Youngs, Latimers, Kays, Hills, Davis’, Speeds, Clinkscales, Cozby’s, Speers’, Groves, Huckabees, Moseleys, Brownlees, Princes, DuPrees, Mauldins, Bells, Arnolds, Harpers, Pettigrews, Hodges, Gantts, Lockharts, et. al. They were among the best citizens for miles around.
