Bowden Joyce, Founding Mothers

was Ellen. 63 She married L.W. Jordan in 1872. He was born near Greenwood in 1849. 64 L.W.’s general merchandise business in Greenwood was Jordan & Brothers. 65 After two quick ownership changes, he sold his interest in the business to a new company whose principals were Rowena’s husband and Ludie’s husband. 66 Soon, Ludie’s husband changed plans and sold his interest in the business. 67 Following that sale, Ellen and her husband moved to Seneca. Ludie and her husband probably followed soon after. As if groomed by her mother and her mother’s family for spiritual leadership, Ellen was a founder of a Methodist church. When she and L.W. lived in Greenwood, he was Sunday School Superintendent of Greenwood Methodist Church. 68 In Seneca, the first Methodist church joined with several other churches to form the Union Church. Methodists became the sole owners of the Church and renamed it Seneca Methodist Church. Among its founders were Ellen and her husband. 69 At the turn of the century, L.W. sold his interest in the store he owned with Ludie’s husband and started a new business, Seneca Cotton Mill. In 1902, he was injured in a buggy accident and died of these injuries the next year. 70 He was buried in Seneca. 71 Angeles, Los Angeles >Death certificates 1933 no 2130-4600>image 2482 of 2653; California State Archives, Sacramento.
