Bowden Joyce, Founding Mothers

During the 1860s, Robert expanded from tailoring into other businesses. 16 He also served very briefly during the Civil War, in the 5 th Regiment, South Carolina Reserves, before applying for and receiving an exemption. 17 After first supporting his wife’s Methodist activities, when Presbyterian businessmen offered him a real estate investment opportunity, he not only joined them but joined their church. 18 After the war, Robert bought a hotel near the railroad station. The family moved into the hotel and operated it for several years. Later known as Riley’s Hotel, the hotel was their last Greenwood home. Their sixth child was born there. 19 To be unanimously remembered as a founder, Caroline Rebecca must have been not only active and visible but also persuasive in promoting Methodist expansion in the village because she was a member of Greenwood Methodist Church for only 10 years, 1858-1868. During that time, led by her husband, little by little the family gravitated to Rock Presbyterian Church. In due course, in addition to interring their fourth child in that church’s cemetery, Caroline Rebecca and Robert had their three youngest children baptized in that church. 20 16 1860 U.S. census, Abbeville District, South Carolina, population schedule, Greenwood Post Office, p. 104 (penned), dwelling 767, family 742, Robt [Robert] H.
