Bowden Joyce, Founding Mothers

When all was said and done, Caroline Rebecca joined Rock Presbyterian Church.

A letter of DISMISSION from the Methodist E [Episcopal] Church South for Mrs. Caroline Rebecca Mounce wife of R.H. Mounce was presented to session, & from the personal knowledge of the members of her character [italics mine] . . . she was recd . . . into our member- ship, & her name enrolled . . . . 21

Leaving Greenwood Methodist Church and joining the church where her husband was a member certainly signaled that the Mounce family fully supported expanding Presbyterian presence in the village. Caroline Rebecca and Robert lived in Greenwood nearly 20 years before moving to another state at the end of the 1860s. 22 They did return settling in Spartanburg where Caroline Rebecca died and was buried. She was 45 years old. 23 She left three children ages 13 and under. Robert remarried. Sallie A. (Motes) Finley was his second wife. Robert died three years later. 24 His place of burial is not known.
