wife or ex-wife, died in 1940 and was buried in Augusta, in Richmond County. 38 Clarence was born 22 November 1863 in Greenwood. 39 John Lee Mounce, child number six, early in his working life was a telegraph operator and probably started as such with the cotton broker for whom he worked when he died. He worked for the broker for 15-20 years in its Greenwood and New York City offices. During the two to three years prior to his death, which occurred in New York City 20 January 1932, John had spent more time there than in Greenwood 40 probably because of volatile markets after the 1929 stock market crash. “By mid-January [1932] it became apparent the economy had entered a new, sharp, downward spiral. Bank closures were surging, with more than seven hundred in December and January. Frightened bankers . . . were selling assets, calling in loans, and shutting down lending operations in a desperate scramble for liquidity.” 41 John was born 15 January 1869. 42 In 1900 he married Martha Elizabeth Marcella Holman who survived him. Both were buried in Greenwood. 43 38 “Mrs. Mounce Dies in Chevy Chase,” Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle , 29 January 1940, online archives (https:www.genealogybank.com : 28 May 2021), p. 2, col. 5.
