I. Who Ann Was and What She Did

Anna M. (Daniel) Turpin, called Ann, was misidentified more often than any other founder of Greenwood Methodist Church. Some who wrote about the founders confused her with a sister. Other authors identified her as her son’s widow. One not only named Ann her son’s widow, he identified Ann’s daughter Annie, also a founder of Greenwood Methodist Church, as a child of Ann and her son! Below is Ann’s true family. Tree, Anna M. “Ann” Daniel and Rev. Thomas D. Turpin Ann came from an early American family. Her mother’s ancestors arrived from England in the 1600s. Peninsulas in eastern Virginia were destinations of two families, Christian and Daniel, on her mother’s side. Thomas Christian was the first in his family to appear in Virginia records. He migrated from the Isle of Man and bought land in Charles City County in 1687. William Daniel Sr. bought land in Middlesex County in 1672. His son Robert was born in England probably in 1659. Robert was under sheriff and justice of Middlesex County and vestryman of the county’s Christ Church Parish. Ann’s Daniel line in America ran from William Sr. through his son Robert then through Robert’s son James. James married Jane Hicks. They moved west to Goochland County where James was justice of the peace and sheriff. James held the same posts in Albemarle County after it was created from Goochland and Louisa counties. Ann’s Daniel line continued through James’s son Chesley. Chesley was born in Middlesex County, Virginia, 16 January 1730/1. He married Judith Woodson Christian who was born in Goochland County in 1738 after her parents Charles Christian Jr. and Judith Woodson had moved there. Chesley Daniel and Judith Woodson Christian married about 1760. To “set his sons up,” James had bought property in Lunenburg County, south of Goochland and Albemarle counties.
