Cathedral Handbook 2017-18

Minor Injuries: School personnel will routinely treat minor cuts and bruises.

Medications: All medications, including over-the-counter, should be left at the school office with written directions as to dosage and times of administration. Boys should not take ANY medications with them to their classrooms, prescribed or over-the-counter, without prior school approval. When sending medi- cation for a boy, please do not send large bottles. Put the amount he needs in an envelope with your written instructions. Communicable Diseases: A child who is unusually tired or shows symptoms of a cold should be kept at home. This may help prevent a longer absence and protect classmates if illness develops. If a boy has a contagious disease, it must be reported at once, and he should not return to school until the contagious period has passed. When a contagious disease occurs in a class, families of children thus exposed will be notified by the School. If the cause of absence is a fever, the School requires the student to have a normal temperature (less than 99 degrees Fahrenheit without medication) for 24 hours before he can return to school. When warranted, we may require a doctor’s note before returning to school. Head lice are a common problem among school-age children. If a case of head lice is discovered, parents should immediately contact the School and check with their physician for recommended treatment. Upon return to school, the student will be checked for lice by a faculty member, staff member, or a trained volunteer. Notice of Excuse from Physical Education: Any boy who is to be excused for health reasons from physical education or other normally required activities must bring written notice of such excuse to the Front Desk. Medical Leave: From time to time, medical issues can require a student to be away from school. The students are expected to make up any missed work during such absences. The School will work closely with the student and his parents to create a reasonable and manageable plan to account for this responsibility. On rare occasions, a prolonged medical absence may result in the student’s inability to complete the academic work needed for promotion to the next grade. Cathedral School will approach such issues on a case-by-case basis and, as circumstances allow, will do all that it can to work with the student and his parents to create an appropriate work schedule that will result, ultimately, in the student’s promotion. As such, the School reserves the right to require the student to complete additional academic work and/or internal or external testing, to receive outside academic support, and/or to complete designated summer academic work in order for the student to be promoted to the next grade. Absence of Parents: When parents are out of town, the Front Desk should be informed who is in charge of the student. Written notice with this information should be delivered to the School before the parents leave town. Disaster Preparedness In the event of a fire, the School will be evacuated according to a well-rehearsed plan. Fire drills are regularly conducted under the supervision of the San Francisco Fire Department.
