Cathedral Handbook 2017-18

Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys Grace Cathedral has had a men’s choir since its founding as an institution in 1906, but it was not until 1913 that boys’ voices were added. The centuries-old Anglican tradition of a men and boys choir has since blossomed here, as one of a handful of such choirs in the United States. Currently, the Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys comprises 13 choirmen and 20 choristers. The boys of the Choir are students at Cathedral School. Students from Cathedral School audition for the Choir beginning in the second grade and families can choose for their sons to join the Choir, on a probationary basis, if accepted. From third through eighth grades, the choristers receive an exceptional musical education. Upon successful completion of their probationary year, boys also receive a partial scholarship during their time in the Choir. For more information about the Choir, please contact Ben Bachmann, Choir Director, at (415) 749-6334 / benb@gracecathedral.org, or Deb Rockwood, Choir Guild President, at drockwood@gmail.com. Cathedral School Athletics values the development of an active body through physical expression and the belief that exercise facilitates both personal and intellectual growth. This program is designed to focus on the process of physical activity and athletic achievement, with the intent of encouraging all athletes to strive for their maximum potential, both as individuals and team members. The athletic department views practices and games as the opportunity for Cathedral athletes to demonstrate their abilities, always try their best, never give up, and have fun while participating competitively. It is our expectation that all Cathedral teams and individual members will demonstrate an understanding of competitive excellence, sportsmanship, character, respect, accountability, dedication, teamwork, and cooperation. Continuing to strive for these attributes will provide each athlete with a positive experience that is both challenging and rewarding. The Cathedral School athletics program provides an environment that nurtures the holistic development of boys—we encourage growth on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. The guiding principle of Cathedral School Athletics is our belief in the value of athletics as an educational tool. Our interscholastic athletics program is an integral component in offering an excellent education for boys. Athletics comple- ment our academic curriculum and serve as a teaching tool to educate and instill valuable life lessons such as responsibility, teamwork, competition, sportsmanship, work ethic, commitment, discipline, and leadership in our students.
