Cathedral Handbook 2017-18

Plaza of Grace Cathedral, featuring bouncy houses, food, and our annual pie/baked goods competition. The date of this year’s Cathedral School Sunday & All-Family Picnic is Sunday, October 15, 2017. Service begins at 11 a.m. in Grace Cathedral followed immediately by the picnic festivities on the Plaza. Chapel: As an Episcopal school, Cathedral School includes within its ministry to boys the nourishment of both their minds and their spirits. All boys regularly participate in public worship in the Great Quire of the Cathedral as part of their life in the school community. All-school chapels are held on Mondays and Fridays. There is a separate chapel for Lower School on Wednesdays and one for Upper School on Tuesdays. Holy Eucharist is regularly celebrated in chapel, and boys in the fifth through eighth grades may receive Communion if they so desire. All chapels start at 8:25 a.m. Parents are encouraged and welcome to join chapel services, especially each Friday morning which features a spirited Hymn Sing for all, as well as a piece performed by the boys of the Choir. Christmas Concerts at Grace Cathedral: The Choir of Men and Boys annually perform five acclaimed holiday concerts in Grace Cathedral. Tickets are available for purchase through the Grace Cathedral website. Following the first Saturday concert in December, there is a festive reception for all attending Cathedral School families and alumni. Community Service and Engagement: All boys take part in age-appropriate service learning opportuni- ties throughout the year. As the students move up through the grades, these opportunities will become more regular through partnerships with Grace Cathedral, neighborhood schools, and other local orga- nizations. It is our objective that our boys become aware of different communities and needs through programs that highlight our shared humanity and interconnectedness. All students participate in the annual Boys for Bayview Mission program, an existing partnership between Cathedral School and the Bayview Mission, a ministry of Grace Cathedral which serves families in the Bayview community in San Francisco. The center of this relationship is a fall drive for essential needs such as diapers and baby wipes to help families through the holiday season. Boys also build a holiday gift tree at the School that contains Christmas gift wishes from specific children served through the Bayview Mission, Grace Cathedral’s Jail Ministries, and local foster agencies. All gifts are collected at school in early December, and boys wrap the gifts in Big Brother/Little Brother pairs before they are distributed to the children. Eighth grade boys also spend time volunteering at the Bayview Mission before the drive and during the Mission’s holiday party when the essential items and gifts are distrib- uted to families and children. There are also additional opportunities for student and family volunteerism throughout the year, such as after-school meal preparation for programs that support those in need including senior citizens and those without homes. These opportunities will be communicated through the weekly Bulletin and by members of the School’s Student Council. Class Day: During the last week before graduation, the eighth-grade class enjoys a special outing together, affording them an appropriate way to celebrate their hard work and time at Cathedral School.
