HOW SUCCESS CAN MEAN A CHANGE IN OPERATIONS

In 1997, Becky and I started Teeco Solutions based solely on an idea and a dream. In the beginning, we had nothing, and starting a business from scratch in an existing market was far from easy. Looking back, it’s interesting to evaluate my business decisions — the great and the not-so-great — and one of the most pivotal points in our early years came from the evolution of our pricing. In the beginning, Teeco Solutions consisted of only Becky and me. We were trying our best to be a success, and fewer employees meant more money could stay in the company and more food could stay on our table. In addition, with Becky and I doing things ourselves, budgeting was easier, and there was less to worry about when we evaluated risk. Back in the day, my marketing strategy barely existed, and not many people knew who I was apart from my business. I eventually took out a small ad in the Yellow Pages of the phone book, but I didn’t keep a track record. However, I knew that my best clients were people in need of a small number of tents and accessories, so I started targeting graduation parties. Small tents — 20-by-20, 20-by-30, and 30-by-30 — were my bread and butter in the graduation party scene. Since I was brand-new to the tent-rental world, I knew that first impressions were going to make or break my business. We made it our mission to keep our tents spotless, show up on time, provide great customer service, and provide tent insurance. I knew that referrals were going to make us successful, so I never gave anyone a chance to give us a poor review. The first two years with our tent rental company were profitable for the business because of our reputation, and we were able to put a considerable amount of money back into the company.

More profit and extra cash meant I could purchase more tents and other accessories, and our cost structure went up as we grew in customer size and profit. Suddenly, I had an overhead that I had to meet year-round instead of solely during graduation season, and I had to learn how to maintain a year-round cost model. Once my business started to expand, I started to lose money on my small tent sizes, which had originally been essential to my success! This was an eye-opener for me. Even if I raised my prices as high as the market value would allow, I still wouldn’t make enough money to break even. After taking time to brainstorm solutions to my problem, I realized that I still needed to offer all of my products, including my small tents, but I needed to find other ways to make money doing so. From that point on, I began to offer customer pick-up, and I started to bundle my products. Bundling actually became as convenient for my customers as it was for me, and it allowed me to turn a profit. I also began to give my customers incentive to set up their tents toward the beginning of the week instead of a normal Thursday or Friday. This allowed me to balance the workload of my employees and myself throughout the week. Plus, I could rent out more tents and schedule more setups. Starting a business is not easy. It took me many years, but eventually, I learned how to balance the pricing and profits in my company while also finding my niche in an existing marketplace. With the right attitude and a willingness to welcome change, you too have the ability to become a business success.

When someone tells you about their business, an event they’re attending, or their friend’s lost dog, what makes you pass that information along to someone else? According to Live Science, you share the information because it makes you look good, not them. A study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania examined the brain activity of 80 college students while they read 80 titles and abstracts from the New York Times’ health section. These articles had been shared a total of 120,000 times via Facebook, Twitter, and email by real readers, according to the New York Times. Over the course of the study, researchers noticed a specific brain activity pattern that was linked to the students sharing the articles in the real world. Emily Falk, the study’s senior author and the director of Penn’s Communication Neuroscience Lab, found that people are interested in reading or sharing content that connects

to their own experiences. According to Falk, “They share things that might improve their relationships, make them look smart or empathic, or cast them in a positive light.” Whether you share information through word of mouth, social media, or email, this makes complete sense. We share information that resonates with us because it connects to our emotions. These findings are not only pertinent to Falk, who hopes this information will help the science community share health behavior changes, but also to any person who has a message to share. And we all have information to share. Small-business owners communicate with customers, parents try to get through to teenagers, grandparents try to relate to their grandkids, journalists communicate with readers, doctors communicate with patients, etc. The moral of the story is this: If you have information you want shared, make the people you are talking to feel good about themselves when they pass it on.

MICHAEL BREUS’ ‘THE POWER OF WHEN’

You know you’re supposed to eat right, exercise every day, and sleep 8 hours each night. You might even have a routine down from when the alarm goes off to when your head hits the pillow. But did you know there’s actually a perfect time to do each thing every day? That’s the thesis of “The Power of When,” a new time- management book by Dr. Michael Breus. Breus, a clinical psychologist who specializes in sleep disorders, realized that

That wonder led him to look into what else could be timed for maximum efficiency. And the more he researched, the more he discovered. “Contrary to what you might have heard, there is a perfect time to do everything,” Breus writes. From that cup of coffee and your daily workout to when you watch TV, there’s a time for every activity in your day. And by a “perfect time,” Dr. Breus means a perfect time for you. Much of this book is dedicated to helping you learn your own habits and preferences, so you can customize your perfect time routine according to what will work in your own life. Breus is a scientist first, and his findings are based on hard evidence. His advice on when to wake up, for example, involves the use of a sleep monitor and is based on our internal biological clocks, which were, for thousands of years, activated by the sunrise. Humans were slowly brought into stage 1 or 2 sleep by the gentle increase of light. That method is less taxing on our systems and leaves us feeling more awake when we rise. This book covers everything, from learning something new or drinking coffee to meditating or using the restroom. Whether you want to read a book at the optimum time, or change your sleep schedule, “The Power of When” is a must-read.

for some of his patients the time they went to sleep was actually more important than the amount of sleep they got. By changing when they crashed, they changed how effective that sleep was. “I wondered, ‘What else could this work for?’” Breus says.

Deep down, you know the irate caller will probably not be a repeat customer because you’ve seen it happen before. And it gets worse. It’s a proven fact that, on average, a customer will tell 10 of their friends about their bad experience. Maybe you send someone out to clean the tent and make the customer happy, but the sting of the phone call — and the potential fallout from it — lingers. Secretly, you know this will not be the last time a customer complains about a dirty tent top. Most tent-rental business owners have had this feeling at one time or another. In 1997, we started a tent rental company, and within two years, we were faced with the same reality. Then, one day, we made a vow to never offer a customer a dirty tent again. Since that day, over 250 tent rental companies across the world have used the tent washing machines we developed to eliminate the hassle of dirty tents. The key to success is to never let a dirty top leave your building. You may be a bit skeptical that this can be accomplished. But we know this is possible, and for $8,500 , we will be your partner in guaranteed success.

Ryan joined Anchor in 2015 and serves our mid-Atlantic customers throughout Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. His territory was recently expanded to include Kentucky and North Carolina. Ryan’s home base is Brooklyn, New York. Ryan has over 18 years of experience in the tent rental industry, both on the rental side of the business and the manufacturing side. His favorite part of the job is accepting challenging orders. Ryan enjoys understanding a customer’s specific need and determining the correct products to make the event a success. He says the best parts are completing the job and seeing the final product. Also,

Have and Use the Right Chemicals First and foremost, you have to have the right chemicals for your part of the country. What works in Texas won’t necessarily work in New York. With that in mind, know that the right chemical or cleaning solution for you may cost more, but in the long run, if it cleans better and requires less labor and time, it will be a worthwhile investment. Be sure to take the time to test different chemicals to figure out what works best!

it’s important you know Ryan’s obsession: Soxy. Never heard of Soxy? Just ask him! It’s guaranteed he can always be seen in a pair of loud, bold, stylish Soxy socks. Just like Soxy says … why fit in when you’re born to stand out? We think you’re great, Ryan!

WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THIS SUNLIGHT? How to Celebrate the Longest Day of the Year

We call the summer solstice the “longest day of the year,” and though there aren’t really more hours in the day, extended hours of sunlight do make June 21 feel longer. So, why not do something with that extra light? We can’t all make a pilgrimage to Stonehenge to watch the sunrise, but there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the summer solstice wherever you live. Try Outdoor Yoga Yoga is a popular activity for exercise and stress relief, practiced by millions across the world. The International Day of Yoga is held on June 21 each year. Expert and beginner yoga enthusiasts alike celebrate by taking their yoga mats outside. If you happen to be in New York City, the summer solstice in Times Square is a day- long yoga event starting at 7 a.m., but if the Big Apple is out of your reach, you can also join in with the live stream or check out the International Day of Yoga website at idayofyoga.org for more opportunities to get involved. Catch Some Waves The summer solstice also happens to fall right after International Surfing Day, so many people will celebrate both together. Why not enjoy the extra hours of sun by road tripping out to the beach to

catch some waves? The official International Surfing Day website, surfrider.org/isd, has lots of information and lists great ways to celebrate. You might even be surprised to find awesome events near you! Shakespeare in the Park While June 21 marks the first day of summer, the week surrounding the summer solstice is often referred to as midsummer. William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” takes its name from this, so what better way to mark the occasion than with some of the Bard’s classic works? Theater groups all across the countrysharingsharing put on outdoor performances under the name “Shakespeare in the Park,” and it’s a wonderful chance for the community to come out and enjoy some of literature’s greatest stories. There are numerous celebrations surrounding the summer solstice, which extend back to humanity’s earliest histories. While there are different traditions, they all have something in common: being outside in the sunlight. Why waste a sunny day? Get out there and have some fun!
