JANUARY 2025

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA January is a time of reflection and renewal — a chance to focus on priorities while planning for a new year. At Twin Cities PBS, we look forward to sharing stories that matter, including stories that entertain, promote lifelong learning and keep audiences informed about issues impacting their hometown. On January 7, “Finding Your Roots” with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. returns for its eleventh season. This treasured series delves into the family trees of 19 fascinating guests, using genealogical research and cutting-edge DNA technology to uncover personal histories that celebrate America’s rich diversity. This season also features Minnesota Chef Sean Sherman, who has made it his mission to revitalize Indigenous food systems in his book “The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen” and at his award-winning restaurant Owamni. That same evening, “Lucy Worsley Investigates” kicks off a new season with an exploration of Jack the Ripper. The intrepid historian revisits historical mysteries to uncover new heroes, villains and overlooked voices. “Masterpiece” also returns with two fan favorites: “All Creatures Great & Small” and “Miss Scarlet,” this time without The Duke. Season 5 of “All Creatures Great & Small” brings James and Tristan back to Darrowby for a heartwarming new chapter filled with animal antics, Mrs. Hall’s wartime contributions and a delightful baby Jim. Meanwhile, “Miss Scarlet” makes a roaring comeback as Eliza’s agency thrives, while her personal life remains in flux as she navigates her relationship with a new Detective Inspector. On January 17 at 8 pm, “This Is Minnesota Orchestra” continues with “Søndergård Conducts Nordic Soundscapes,” a breathtaking exploration of Nordic musical traditions. From the stormy drama of Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto, performed by Principal Clarinet Gabriel Campos Zamora, to Jean Sibelius’s iconic “Finlandia,” this program promises a rich tapestry of sound and emotion. As we embark on another new year, I want to thank you for your continued support. Your generosity ensures that TPT can deliver programming and experiences with impact. Here’s to a joyful New Year filled with stories that inspire and unite.

Introducing TPT’s Viewers Like Us Clubs TPT and Community Partners Host Screenings and Dialogues for Older Adults

The Viewers Like Us Clubs are centered around four key goals:

Expand Educational Programming Reach with Inclusivity Learning does not end after finishing formal education, and this initiative expands our programming beyond our traditional pre-K through 12th grade audience. Designed with older adults (55+) and their families in mind, we are dedicated to extending our educational programming to engage adult learners across diverse ages and stages within informal learning settings. In addition, we see great value in viewers from different generations co-viewing programs and reflecting together. Strengthen Community Partnerships: Strong partnerships make our work with the community possible. The Viewers Like Us Clubs initiative provides the opportunity to partner with organizations that are aligned with our mission and that work with our viewers. This includes senior centers, libraries, adult learner and continuing education centers, and gatherings for community members. Diversify Content Offerings The Viewers Like Us Clubs will feature critically acclaimed programs from TPT and PBS. Our media collection will highlight and celebrate the deep diversity of backgrounds and experiences that make up Minnesota with stories focused on our state’s history, arts, and culture. In addition, the conversation and feedback provided at screenings will inform how future programs and resources are created.

Whether huddled around a television screen with family or gathered in a classroom to stream a documentary, we know that media has the power to bring community together around topics that matter. This is at the core of our mission at Twin Cities PBS, so TPT’s Center for Lifelong Learning is excited to announce our new initiative, Viewers Like Us Clubs. Viewers Like Us Clubs invite community members to come together in groups to watch local and national PBS programs, and to connect with each other over thoughtful conversation around the themes presented in the shows. Think of it like a book club: It’s an opportunity to dive into a story with friends and family and reflect on it together, without the commitment of finishing a 400-page novel.

JANUARY 2025

Professional Development for Facilitators Our initiative will empower individuals to use our media as a foundation to facilitate conversations. We will offer professional development opportunities for individuals leading community conversations, ensuring they are well equipped to facilitate meaningful and effective discussions. Since the fall of 2024, we have been busy connecting with our first round of partners to make sure that our programming is a strong fit for the communities they serve and that our content matches their needs. During the winter and spring of 2025, TPT will collaborate with our partners to facilitate sessions hosted at their community sites. These sessions will consist of screenings from the different TPT and PBS shows, and facilitated conversations with participants, including producers and staff who helped create the programs.

We will end our program year with an event at TPT’s Lowertown studios during the summer of 2025. The event will be a celebration of all the learnings from the sessions. Although participation in this year’s Viewers Like Us Clubs is limited to our pilot program community members, it is our goal to learn from this initial year and expand our offerings in the future. If you are an individual interested in participating or an organization interested in partnering, find us on our website, TPTLearn.org, for updates and ways to keep in touch.

Using a Nature Journal to Connect with Your Surroundings By Anna Champagne

Nature journaling is a centuries-old method of recording thoughts and observations about the natural world. It typically involves observing something in nature, such as a plant, animal or landscape, and drawing or writing about it in a dedicated sketchbook or journal. The practice is an excellent way to strengthen your observation skills and learn about something new. As you observe objects in nature, ask questions about what you see. What is it? How does it work? Why is it unusual? Write down the questions or answers in your nature journal to enhance your memory and make a record of the observation. Many people start small with just a pencil and a sketchbook. Other common nature journaling materials include pens, colored pencils, markers, watercolors, rubber stamps, glue sticks, magazine clippings and pressed flowers.

Additional supplies can also be helpful, depending on the topic of your nature journal. For example, binoculars and magnifying tools can help you get a closer look at wildlife; field guides can help you identify birds, plants and insects; and measuring tools can help you quantify observations and represent proportions and scale. Journal prompts for nature walks, birdwatching, daily weather observations, backyard gardening and other everyday activities can help you get started on your nature journal. • Take a nature walk. Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells as you walk down your chosen trail. Identify interesting discoveries along the way. Then, draw a map of your route and note where each discovery was located. Use drawings, text-based labels or embellishments (like magazine clippings or stickers) to represent each item, animal, place or moment. • Sit at a window overlooking a bird feeder or find a comfortable spot outside and watch birds. Identify them by name if you can. Listen to the sounds they are making. Then, focus on just one bird. Draw the bird, using as much detail as you can. Listen to the bird's song. Use thick, thin, straight, sloping and wavy lines to create a sound diagram representing the song.

Closet Therapy: When It’s Time to Throw a Few Things Out By Laura Petiford

Lately, my life has felt uncomfortably snug. Like the waistband of how I spend my days is squeezing each passing moment into a muffin top of unpleasantness. I feel constrained by having too many things. Things have seemingly engaged in a mutiny, threatening to overtake me, inciting an urgent need to purge my surroundings and reclaim my rightful reign. The long-tenured books huddled on the shelves flanking my television suddenly occupying far too much space. I cleared them in an afternoon with the conviction of a four-star general.

Things have seemingly engaged in a mutiny, threatening to overtake me, inciting an urgent need to purge my surroundings and reclaim my rightful reign.

Accumulated over the years, they've pizzazzed any lackluster ensemble with a simple draping of cloth around my neck or shoulders. Pulling them from their hooks, I held each one, feeling the weight and the texture. Memories came. The long mustard-colored scarf, a gift from a former friend, the unworn accessory is enduring far beyond the length of our friendship. A flouncy black one from my cousin in Germany, a touchstone to a family I barely know, and all I have left of my mother. The sheer rectangle, with strands of thick yarn protruding here and there, purchased on the streets of Paris tendered with francs, reminded me I had lived there once. All of these I kept; the feelings and thoughts they evoked were part of the fabric of my story. Those with no memory associated with them no longer held any aesthetic or emotional appeal. They were easy to relinquish to the toss pile.

Breathing relief, I still felt an internal niggling. There was no escaping that something else I had yet to name was happening. Something to do with the drumbeat of passing time echoing in my ears, deepening a need for more and less. I felt drawn to the bedroom closet of my 100-year-old home to see what the motherload of excess could reveal. Surveilling the converted tiny bedroom, now a decent-sized walk-in, I eyed my scarves hanging in multitudes upon hooks protruding from an over- the-door hanger like a row of prominent noses dripping fabric and knitted yarn.
