39. The context of this portion of Scrip ture is also vital. In Ezekiel 36-48, the Word of God (continued on next page) 3

COMMUNISM (cont.) gives us a thrilling picture of the past, present, and future history of the Na tion Israel. In chapter 36 we read of the desolation of the Land of Pales tine, also we learn of His coming which is promised. Chapter 38, enlarges upon the same picture and tells the means by which Israel will be restored. In chapters 40-48, we have a marvelous description of what it will be like when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to estab lish His Millennial reign or kingdom upon this earth. First of all, looking at Israel’s past, the desolation of the Land of Palestine was a result of the national sins of God’s chosen people, but always true to His promise, there is national de liverance from the affliction of nations. In Ezekiel 36:19 we read, “And I scattered them among the heathen (the word heathen is, of course Gentiles), and ' they were dispersed through the countries . . .” For 20 centuries the Jews have been people of wandering feet, hated, persecuted, killd. Ezekiel 36:17 suggsts reason: “When the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own doings.” Such a pronouncement would have been dif ficult to understand but for God’s prom ise of deliverance. See Ezekiel 36:21-23. This above prophecy will be fulfilled when the Lord JeSus Christ places His feet upon the Mount of Olives. Espe cially read verse 35 of that chapter. May we pause here to call atten tion to the fact that even at this pres ent time the Jewish people, in return ing to the land of Palestine have scien tifically and agriculturally performed the impossible. Through dams and canals they have brought the deserts to look like a Garden of Eden. This particular prophecy will be fulfilled to a greater extent upon the return of the Lord, but these are the first visible signs. THE VALLEY OF DRY BONES as seen in Ezekiel 37 is an interesting illus tration of the Nation Israel. In verses

1-10 we are told the bones are dry. Then we see the sinews and flesh come upon them—but mark you, there is no breath in them. Later it says the breath came into them and they stood upon their feet; an exceeding great army. Verses 11-14 are God’s explana tion of this illustration. Read this pas sage carefully as we need to see it "Alone With Thee" Back in 1948, a young woman was just getting out of college and look ing forward to missionary service in a needy part of the world. She pen ned words that she, perhaps, did not fully understand at the time of their writing, a verse entitled "Alone With Thee." The authoress, a young lady by the name of Elizabeth Howard, better known today by her married name, Betty Elliott— widow of one of the martyred men in Ecuador. Perhaps some future day. Lord, Thy strong hand Will lead me to the place where I must stand Utterly alone. Alone, O gracious Lover but for Thee, I shall be satisfied if I can see Jesus only. I do not know Thy plan for years to come, M y spirit finds in Thee its perfect home, Sufficiency. Lord, all my desire is before Thee now; Lead on— no matter where, no matter how, I trust in Thee. — Betty Elliott While we see that they are scattered among the nations, we also see God’s promise that they would be brought again to their own land. For centuries the Gentile countries have been the national cemeteries of the Jews. We dread to look back at the ghettos and 4 clearly before going into the study of chapters 38 and 39.

What Then? When all the great plants of our cities Have turned out their last finished work; When our merchants have sold their last yard of silk. And dismissed the tired, weary clerk; When our banks have taken in their last dollar And declared their last dividend; When the Judge of the world says, "Close for the night," And asks for a balance— W H A T THEN? When the chorus has sung its last anthem And the preacher has said his last prayer; When the people have heard their last sermon And the sound has died out on the air; When the Bible lies closed on the altar And the pews are all empty of men, When we all stand facing the record And the Great Book is opened— W H A T TH EN ? When the bugle's last call sings in silence And the long marching columns stand still; When the Captain has given His last orders, And they've captured the last fort and hill, When the flag has been hauled from the masthead, And all the wounded checked in; When a world that rejected its Saviour, Is asked for a reason— W H A T THEN ? — Author Unknown * * * "When the church ceases to be in touch with another world, she is no longer a torch to this one." gas chambers of World War II. When history unfolds the facts she holds, Russia will no doubt be shown to have exterminated more Jews than did the murderer Hitler in his evil regime. Now while the Jews are returning in amazing numbers to Palestine there is still no breath in them—they are a political movement and not a religious group. But the promise is given that the breath will return; this is the time when Christ, the Messiah, returns in glory and He will rule over Israel, a redeemed nation. SYMBOL OF THE TWO STICKS is simi lar to the illustration of the dry bones. We shall not be able to study this but it shows that the tribes of Jacob will be reunited again. And as we have the privilege of seeing these things come to pass, we have the primary undertand- ing of the background of the greatest Communist and satanic push that shall befall the earth in the very near future. There has been nothing like it before for the reason that Communism hates any religion that reveres one true God. Ever since God gave the land of Pales tine to Abraham—Palistine and the na tion Israel have represented pure monotheism and this is the reason for the tremendous atack upon the country of Palestine by the Russian bear. Russia is anti-Semitic which is satanic and we must remember that our prayer to God is that Israel might be saved. In the light of Scripture we do not see one single thing that has yet to be fulfilled before the Lord calls His church home to Glory. The signs point unmistakably to the fact that Christ could come at any ■moment. This should be a cause for great joy and re joicing that we might look up for our redemption draweth nigh. Following the homegoing of the Church, those who remain on this earth—who have rejected Christ—will see in increasing intensity, the dangerous menace of Communism and Russia’s bold stroke to take the Land of Palestine. AND THE

WORLD PICTURE

Radio Message by A l Sanders F r e q u e n t l y t h e question comes to us, “Where does Communism fit into the world picture? Will it event ually triumph?” We have looked at the pronounce ment of sentence upon the Jews be cause of their sins as a chosen people; how they were scattered among the nations, were a hiss and a by-word. FOUR GREAT CONFEDERACIES will be on thp earth at the time of the end. First, of all, the Confederacy of the West or the revived Roman Empire, which will be headed by the anti-Christ. No doubt the United States and Great Britain will be a part of this Western Confederacy. Russia and the Eastern Confederacy which might well be headed up in China or somewhere in the Orient. And finally, the countries South of Palestine will form the Confederacy of the South. Now, catch this important picture. The Tribulation period, as it comes to a close, will find the anti-Christ ruling over the Western Confederacy and finally emerging supreme over the other three. Before this happens, how ever, there must be a downfall of Com munism. Let’s see this picture as given in Ezekiel 38:1: “And the Word of the Lord came unto me, saying, son of man, set thy face against Gog, the

land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord God; behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.” Now, to find out the meaning of these names we must go back to Genesis 10:2. Here the three sons of Japheth, mentioned in the beginning of the nations are Magog, Tubal, and Meshech. These sons of Japheth moved North in the direction of modem Rus sia. The descendants of Magog, the second son of Japheth, migrated early to the North — Northern Confederacy — in the region now occupied by the Soviets. We must note that whenever the Bible speaks of directions: North, South, East, and West, it always uses Palestine as the center. South is there fore south of Palestine, and so on. Now for the names indicated. "Rosh" means either chief prince or Russia. This is not to stretch interpretation, for we have in the language of today i.e., Turkey which refers to a bird as well as to a nation. So we read again from Ezekiel 30:1, 2: “Son of man, set your face toward Gog in the land of Magog, Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.” "Meshech" can well correspond to “Moscow.” "Tubal" has the same root as “Tobosky,” the chief city of Siberia now renamed. Did Ezekiel know about 6

The people who largely inhabit this land are the Arabians. Historically, there has been a fight between Isaac and Ishmael — here is the culmina tion of that struggle; the Arab nation uniting with the Communist block for the great conflict. But what about Germany? In Eze kiel 38:6 — the name Gomer doubt less has reference to Germany — per haps Eastern Germany. Gomer was the grandson of Noah the son of Japheth. The descendants of Gomer are said to have traveled along the Danube. Their land was quite naturally called the land of Gomer or Gomerland, then passing on into its modem equivalent, Germany. Germany was never a part of the Roman Empire. In the day when the anti-Christ heads the Roman Em pire, Germany will be linked with the Northern Confederacy. "They Shall Not Overflow" Full well we knew our lives would hold Some sorrow, grief, and care, But oh, this cup of anguish Seems more than you can bear. How can you face the swirling floods That would overwhelm your soul? Oh, hark, dear friend, and hear God's Word— "They shall not overflow." Such grief as this cannot be borne In human strength alone. The Man of Sorrows must draw near And make your grief His own. And though the flood tides threaten you Through which you now must go— Oh, hear His words— and trust Him for "They shall not overflow." — Ethel C. Cyphers In Ezekiel 38:4, the Lord God ad dressed Gog or Russia as one would a wild beast. As a beast would be led about so God will lead this infidel government by hooks in her mouth. Ironically, as she’s thinking she is mak ing the advancement, God will rather be leading her down. 7

Russia? No, but the Holy Spirit did. Josiah was named 300 years before he was bom. Isaiah prophetically ad dressed Cyrus, king of Persia, 150 years before the days of Cyrus. Gog is to be the last ruler of Russia, a contemporary of anti-Christ. Why should God be against Gog? It is possi ble for a man to resist, continuously, the strivings of the Holy Spirit, until judgment is finally meted out to him. Communism is basically atheistic — a hatred of God is its first tenet. The Communist Manifesto states, “We hate religion and God. If God, Himself, were to appear before us, we should refuse to worship Him, but we should consider Him equal with 'us. Our task is to destroy all kinds of religion, all kinds of morality.” In Romans 1, we find that three times, God has given up those who wilfully go against the Lord. The Lord said, “As the days of Noah were, so shall the coming of the Son of man be.” For 120 years Noah preached and no one repented. Wicked ness reigned supreme. Persia was the second of the four great world empires which held sway over the world during the time of the Gentiles; GREECE was next. Persia has never ceased to exist as a nation and she will once more become a factor in world governments during the time Russia seeks to capture Palestine. In 1932 Moscow signed a treaty with Persia, providing that in the event of war free access of Russia through the land of Persia to the middle East and to Palestine would be granted. Three years later, in 1935, the name of Persia was changed to IRAN! The name “Ethiopia” which is men tioned, undoubtedly does not refer to the African Ethiopia. There was an ancient Ethiopia called- “Cush” in Scripture; this was located in the re gion of Babylon, adjoining Persia. The same is true of Libya, the third nation which will be allied with God. The old name for Libya was “Phut.” It has the same geographical location.

experienced soldiers. The common people have a false sense of secur ity. They care no longer for the truth, falling into blindness they give way to all manner of shame fu l sins. I fear that the axe is be ing laid to the root of a tree soon to be cut down. God in His infinite mercy, take us graciously away that we may not be present during such calamities.” —Martin Luther W ill it be true in America? The Bible rightly tells us, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” * * * "Your homein heaven will be built of materials you have sent on." * * * THERE ONCEW AS AN IRISHMAN who had a friend with the bad habit of hitting the Irishman on the leg each time he saw him. In talking with another friend he said that “he knew how he would break Pat of that habit. He would have a stick of dynamite in his pocket and when Pat hit him he would have his hand blown off.” There are many people who believe in rewarding evil for evil, little realizing that they are the greater losers. The Bible tells the Christian that when he is maligned, when things go the wrong way, when others speak evil of him, he is to do as Christ did. For when our Lord was reviled, He reviled not again but committed Himself to His heavenly Father. Perhaps in school, or in the office, there are some who will make fun of you or involve you in some way through their jealousy and petty ac tions. Just commit them to your heavenly Father and gain the vic tory! “Commit thyself unto the Lord.” 8

"Temptations may wrap on your door, but it is your own fault if you let them in." * * * A YOUNG LAD had been called to the witness stand. He was being questioned by a lawyer who wanted the jury to think that the boy had been told what to say. In the cross-examination the de fense was delivered a crushing blow. The attorney began, “We’d like to. know, sonny, hasn't someone told you how to testify?" The lad looked up sheepishly and said, “Why, yes, yes they have.” The attorney smiled triumphantly and prompted, “Then suppose you tell us what they said.” The boy responded brightly, “Well, my daddy told me that there would be a man who would try to get me all tangled up, but if I’d just be careful to tell the truth, I could say anything 1 wanted to.” The court- rom rocked with laughter. The little boy was right, for in perverting the truth we bring ca lamity upon our head as well as that of others. May God help us not to allow the sins of this earth to beset us. “He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house; he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.” (Psalm 101:7). * * * "The foolish man eao soon make up hismindbecausethere is so little of it to make up." * * * "W H EN GOD PUNISHES A PEOPLE or a nation for their sinfulness, He takes away godly teachers a n d preachers; it is left without honest rulers and counsellors, the land is barren, without brave, upright and

I w as am a zed recently when one of our listeners who apparently has been a 'believer for many years asked this very unusual question: “If God is all knowing, and knows what we have need of before we ask, then why is it necessary for a Christian to pray?” I wonder how many other people have asked this very same question. In the light of this, then, I would like to de vote today’s prayer message to this subject, “Why Christians ought to pray.” May I very simply suggest several scriptural reasons for prayer: First, let me point out that it is im portant for believers to pray because the Lord COMM ANDS it! In II Thess. 3:1, the apostle Paul in a benedictory command to the Christians of the church at Thessalonica writes, “Final ly brethren PRAY for us.” Now the primary application of this passage is the instruction to the believers to share in Paul’s ministry through prayer. However the command to pray is strongly implicit here also. In Mat thew 5:44, Jesus commands us to pray for those who would despitefully use us. In Matthew 9:38, we are com manded to pray that laborers might be thrust forth into the whitened spir itual harvest fields of the world. In Matthew 26:41, we are commanded to pray in order that we might be de livered in times of temptation and testing. In Mark 13:33 we are com manded to pray in order that we might be spiritually fit for the Lord’s re turn. In literally dozens of passages of scripture the believer is commanded to pray. How important it is that we pray for this reason, if for no other, that we might be obedient to the com mands and directions of our Lord Jesus Christ. Secondly, let me point out that as believers we ought to pray because it is EXPECTED of us. In I Tim. 2:1-10, careful and detailed instructions are given to Timothy in order that he might be able to teach the believers at Ephesus about prayer. These instruc

tions are based upon the assumption that the believer is to pray. Christ devoted much time to teach ing His disciples about prayer. He had much to say about the purpose of prayer, about the content of our prayers and about the results of praying. All of His teaching is based upon the as sumption, or the expectation that the soul in communion with the Lord will naturally pray. For prayer is indeed the natural outgrowth of the new birth. This truth is further illustrated in Matthew 6:7 where our Lord, in set ting up certain prohibitions and warn ings against malpractices in prayer, simply states, “When ye pray be not as the hypocrites.” Again it is simply assumed that the believer is going to pray. Thirdly, the believer is to pray be cause it is EXEMPLIFIED by our Lord. A very interesting incident is recorded in Luke 11:1 concerning both the teaching of our Lord on prayer and the example which He set before the dis ciples. “And it came to pass, that, as 9

alternatives: p r a y i n g or fainting. Notice what He says, “Men ought al ways to pray and not to faint.” James G. S. S. Thomson ir his monu mental work entitled, “The Praying Christ,” (p. 38) makes a veiy signifi cant statement about prayer in the life of our Lord. “If we would speak the word with power, or exercise the heal ing, soothing touch, there must be in Sufficient Is He His grace is sufficient, Then why need I fear, Though the testing be hard, And the trial severe? He tempers each wind That upon me doth blow, And tenderly whispers, "T h y Father doth know." His power's sufficient, Then why should I quail. Though the storm clouds hang low, And though wild is the gale? His strength will not falter, Whatever betide, And safe on His bosom He bids me to hide. His love is sufficient, the background, unseen, our own con scious communion with God. How soon our puny resources are exhausted unless constantly replenished from the reservoirs of God. How mechanical is our work, how intellectual is our wit ness, how powerless is our word, unless all is performed in the atmosphere of prayer. The harder Christ’s days the longer His prayer times. The busier He was the greater His insistence on the practice of the presence of the Father. Apparently Jesus Christ knew of no substitute for the daily practice of the shut door, the bent knee, the secret communion.” If Jesus Christ prayed concerning the 10 Yes, boundless and free; As high as the mountains, As deep as the sea. Ah, there will I rest Till the darkness is o'er. And wake in His likeness, To dwell evermore.

he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” Of particular interest in this story is the fact that it was the disciples witnessing Jesus in prayer that called forth from their hearts this significant request, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Though they had received some in struction on prayer, looking at Jesus Christ praying, they suddenly realized what prayer really was, and their hearts cried out to know this kind of experience. In Hebrews 5:7 we are told that Christ in the days of His flesh “offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears.” From a care ful study of the Gospels we leam that our Lord often spent entire nights alone in prayer. And we discover that there was a definite pattern to His prayer life. There are some seventeen refer ences to Christ’s active prayer life. A closer look at these reveal the fact that before every significant event of His life He spent time alone with the Father in prayer (Luke 6:12), before the great confession of His Messiah- ship at Caesarea Philippi (Luke 9:18), before the transfiguration (Luke 9:29), in Gethsemane (Luke 22:39), and be fore the cross (Luke 23:46). I’m sure that someone will ask why it was that Jesus found it so important and vital to pray since He was indeed very God Himself. However we need to remember that in His perfect hu manity, having limited Himself in the incarnation, He submitted Himself to the law of dependence upon the Fath er. It is the Son’s dependence upon the Father that points up the necessity of our Lord’s prayer experiences. In addi tion we need to be reminded that our Lord prayed in order that He might, as in other things, leave us an example, Finally, it is important for believers to pray because it is impossible to suc cessfully live the Christian life with out it. In Luke 18:1, it would seem that the Lord gives the believer two

SUCCESS IN LIFE This past summer a most faithful saint of God, who spent nearly two decades serving on the faculty of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, went into the presence of our Lord Jesús Christ .Her name, Bertha H. Pentney. She taught many of our students who are now in strategic places of service around the world. Her classes always include a challenge for Bible memorization and there was a, constant underscoring of the fact that the greatest text book in all the world is the Word of God. She created within the hearts of her students a desire to know more of the Bible. While here with us Miss Pentney wrote many beautiful poems which were published under the ap propriate^ title of “Songs of a Servant." It goes along so well with what has been written below. Compare your life with this evaluation and see if you have found success.

But computed In terms of spirit and soul By a sure, but an unseen, pen. Oh, the plaudits of men may be sweet to your ears But the Master's "well done" is more; And the faithful servant's content to walk Where the Master has gone before. You will surely find, at the journey's end, Whatever the world may afford, That "things" fade away, and success is seen In the life that has served the Lord.

When you come to the end of your span of years, It will not matter then How much you hold in treasure store, Nor how much of the world you gain. Yes, the wealth of the world and the power it brings, Possessions and comfort and ease, Are tempting to all, but your heart well knows Satisfaction comes not from these. True values in life are not measured at all By gold in the marts of men, significant events of this life, how much more should we pray concerning the decisions and daily course of our lives. If Jesus Christ prayed much be fore times of peculiar service for God, how much more should we pray before endeavoring to minister for Him. These are crisis days of momentous importance in history; days that de mand much of every Christian. These are not days for discouragement or de feat, but every new demand is an other opportunity to “let our light so shine before men that they might see our good works and glorify the Fath

er which is in Heaven.” Without these personal, solitary hours of refreshment and spiritual replenishment with our Lord we cannot be equipped to face the pressures and responsibilities of life. May I conclude this message with a personal question to you, my Christian friend. How does your prayer life meas ure up to the standard laid down in God’s word? Has your life been one of fainting and weakness? Then God says that the answer is to pray, rather than to faint. I trust that the Holy Spirit might apply these truths to our hearts today. 11

Q. Napa, California. “W ill there ever be more of the Bible found, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls?” A. We do not know when further Archaeological findings may be made which will yield either parts or the whole of any one book of the Bible. But are grateful when such writings of value do come to light for they verify the record as we have it in the Authorized Version today. All possi ble areas have not been covered which might bring other rich discoveries. Q. Bakersfield, California. This question is a seeming difficulty. “In Matthew and Mark, Lebbaeus, surnamed Thad- daeus, is listed as one of the Twelve Dis ciples. In Mark the name of Thaddaeus is omitted and the name Judah or Judas, brother of James is added. Is this the same man, only perhaps called by a different name?” A. Yes, the Twelve Disciples were twelve distinct followers of our Lord Jesus. That number never varied in His lifetime. Of course, when you find the name Judas substituted, it is just an other name for Thaddaeus. These men had more than one name just as men, today, have two or three names. There were Twelve Disciples men tioned. The first listing of them is in the 10th chapter of Matthew — also read the parallel passage in Mark. I believe that the Judas, who is the brother of our Lord, and brother of James —- wrote the Epistle of Jude.

Q. The listener would also like to know how Judas Iscariot died? There seems to be a discrepancy between John 13:30 and Acts 1:18. A. The Scriptures are eminently clear in differentiating between this Judas just mentioned and the writer of the Epistle. How did Judas Iscariot die? Accord ing to John he went out and hanged himself and according to the Acts the statement is that he fell down and burst asunder. Can these two state ments be reconciled? This is only a seeming discrepancy. Judas went out and hanged himself and then he could well have fallen from the tree and died in the manner indicated in Acts 1:18. Since this is a statement of Scripture, this is evidently the way it happened. Your better commentaries will confirm this. Q. Coquille, California. “What meaning lies in the difference expressed in the Coming of Christ as seen in I Thess. 4:15-18 and Revelation 19:11-14?” A. In I Thessalonians a description of His First Coming is given — how that the Christians shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. In Revela tion chapter 19, it is the second phase of His Coming which is described — this, in Revelation, is the Battle of Armageddon. Q. Long Beach, California. “Christ’s re turn is believed to be imminent, how- 12

to the proper source and we need not be overly concerned as to which mem ber of the Trinity we address our prayers. Q . Fresno, California. “Nathanael is not mentioned as one of the Twelve dis ciples in Matthew, Mark or Luke, but in John 1:45-50, when we have the in cident of Nathanael under the fig tree —is he one of the disciples, perhaps under a different name?” A. The authentic list of the Twelve Apostles is given in Matthew 10:2-4. They were disciples of our Lord, but — M

ever, if during the Great Tribulation the anti-Christ is to desecrate the Tem ple, doesn’t it seem logical that before Christ returns two things must happen namely, the land upon which the Tem ple will be built must belong to Israel instead of to the Arabs, and that the Temple must actually have been at least begun to be built? Isn’t this too short a time for Christ to return at any moment? Even 7 years seems to be a very short period for the redeeming of the land and the building of the Tem ple. However, I realize that things will happen with great speed at that time.” A. Yes, it is believed to be immient. I Cor. 15:52— . . in the twinkling of an eye . . . ” That certainly is immient — it means it is impending— at any moment. Then follows II Thess. 2:1-12 —the descrating of the Temple by anti- Christ. Now “the land must belong to Israel instead of the Arabs”?—We would say yes. And that “the temple must, at least, have begun to be built.” These two questions involve the time element and the second is somewhat answered in these days of pre-fabrication—build ing time is cut down fantastically. We must remember that when God begins to wind up His prophetic program, things are going to happen very, very rapidly. The proof of this statement is found in the 23rd chapter of Leviti cus. It will take 6% months to cover the first four feasts and then in two weeks the remaining three of the 7 feasts will be covered. That will show you something of the rapidity with which things will move at the end time. Q. Santa Cruz, California. “Should we pray to the Holy Spirit?” A. Normally, I would say that it is best to pray to the Father in the name of the Son and empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit. Remember that the prayers we pray, whether they be di rected to the Lord Jesus Christ; the Holy Spirit or to the Father, will get

Dr. Samuel H. Sutherland (right), president of Blola, looks over questions with Dr. Charles L. Feinberg, dean of the Talbot Theological Seminary. they also had a special status; they were endowed with apostolic authority in a special ministry with our Lord Jesus. In John 1:45-50 it is clear that Na thanael became a believer in the Mes- siahship of our Lord Jesus Christ and was no doubt a disciple of our Lord, but his apostleship is nowhere indi cated in the four Gospels or elsewhere in the New Testament. Nathanael is not a disciple under a different name. Q. Santa Barbara, California. “How, and in what city did the Twelve Apostles die?” A. “. . . James, the older brother of John . . . was the first of the Twelve to die; killed by Herod, 44 A.D. Tradi tions are that most of the Twelve died as martyrs.” (continued on next page) 13

Q, Fresno, California. “It would be in teresting to know what the name Saul means in Hebrew and in Greek. Also the meaning of Paul.” A. Saul is a Hebrew name meaning “asked.” His parents, being followers of the Lord God of Israel and being desirous of a son that the family line might be perpetuated and that through him God might be glorified in coming generations—this son was “asked” of God. Hannah, you recall, asked for a son and Samuel was bom to her. The name Paul actually has no re lationship to the name Saul. It comes from the Greek, “paulos,” which means small, and it is a wonderful testimony to the genuine and sincere humility of this great Apostle of our Lord Jesus Christ. Q, San Jose, California. “Some have said that everyone w ill be saved in the last days—even Satan. Is that true?”—“I cannot find Scripture to back that up.” A. The listener is absolutely correct—- there is no Scripture to back up that notion. There is a teaching abroad of universal reconciliation, which believes that those who are saved will, upon death, go directly to be with the Lord, but that the unsaved will go into an intermediate state of suffering at the end of which they will ultimately be saved—Satan and his angels included. There is no Scripture for this. The word “Ionias,” upon which they base their teaching, does mean everlasting when the context clearly states it. But the saved go into everlasting life and the unsaved into everlasting punish ment which was prepared for the devil and his angels. Q. “Am I correct in believing that when Israel is spoken of in the Bible it refers to the Jew?” A. The answer is plainly and simply, yes. In his defence in Acts 21:34, Paul said, “. . . I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia; of no mean city . . .” Also in

Romans 11 that he was of Israel “ . . . for I also am an Israelite of the Tribe of Benjamin . . .” When Israel is spoken of in the Bi ble it refers to the Jew, those who are descendants from Abraham. Natural birth is not what counts ultimately for eternity, what does count is to be a child of Abraham by faith. Q. Portland, Oregon. The listener asks that we please discuss Galatians 5:4 and Romans 10:1. A. Though the passage, Galatians 5:4 has been a crux of interpreters, and has been so for a long while, we have to take it in its context. Paul is writing to the Galatian Church. There were folk there who were just as genuinely saved as any in a true, simple faith in the Lord Jesus Christ—when lo and behold there came along those who began preaching that they had to maintain their Christian life, not by faith, but by works. So the Apostle Paul asks them in Gal. 3:2, 3—“This only would I leam from you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hear ing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” Is God going to tell you to whip up some human enthusiasm that you may walk well-pleasing to Him? No, He says that some of you are bringing in the law. You feel that while you couldn’t be saved by it that perhaps you could go on now and come closer to the norm of Christian living by the use of the law. Paul tells them in Gal. 5:4—“Ye are severed from Christ, ye who would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away from grace.” That does not mean that you have fallen out of grace and are unsaved. No, the word “severed” in the original text is cor rectly, “brought to nought” — you are rendered inoperative; you as a branch are not drawing your life from the vine (Christ) — And to think, He is all the sustenance you need! 14

So, “falling from grace does not mean that you are unsaved — but it does mean that you are living below GRACE PRIVILEGES!! Now, in Romans 10:1 it reads this way, “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.” Dr. Bengel of Ger many said, *. . . Paul would not have prayed for their salvation had he con sidered them (the Jews) reprobate — impossible to Salvation.” And having come from Israel according to the flesh, "Make Me A Captive" Make me a captive, Lord, And then I shall be free; Force me to render up my sword, And I shall conqueror be. I sink in life's alarms When by myself I stand; Imprison me within Thine arms, And strong shall be my hand. M y heart is weak and poor Until its Master find; It has no spring of action sure, It varies with the wind; It cannot freely move. Till Thou hast wrought its chain; Enslave it with Thy matchless love, And deathless it shall reign. M y will is not mine own Till Thou hast made it Thine; If it would reach a monarch's throne It must its crown resign; It only stands unbent, Amid the clashing strife, When on Thy bosom it has leaned And found in Thee its life. — George Matheson myself — I have always rejoiced to realize that when I came into the faith, my own salvation was a part of the answer to Paul’s prayer . . . that Israel might be saved. The help that Israel needs right now is the most important of all — we need to pray that they may be saved. Q, Coquille, Oregon. “ Would you kindly explain Revelation 20:12?” A. There are no five verses in all the

literature in the world that could com pare with Revelation 20:11-15, given on the solemn and sobering subject of the Judgment of the Great White Throne. “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before the throne; and the books were opened: and another book was opened.” The word “another” shows that this isn’t a book taken from among those books previously mentioned—the “one” book is the Book of Life. Now all have been in judgment be fore for their sin as they stood before the cross — and Christ died for all. Those who accepted His death for themselves are believers and will never come into condemnation or judgment. Judgment is now behind them and they will be rewarded for their works at the judgment seat of Christ which is at the rapture — just before the Tribulation. Read II Timothy 4:8. Now look at the picture — Revela tion 20:12 “I saw the dead, the great and small.” They will stand before the throne. In verse 11 we see “earth and heaven fled away” — they are standing then in space, upheld by the very power of God. As they stand there the Book of Life is opened to find whose name is written there — if it is not found, then they are cast into the lake of fire. The basis of separation from God for eternity is a non-acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ and His work on Calvary. After that is determined, the other books are opened and the degree of his punishment will be revealed to each of the lost as the Lord said in Luke, “The servant that knew much will be beaten with many stripes; the servant who knew little will be beaten with fewer stripes.” So, then, those who are before the Great White Throne are the unsaved— they have condemned themselves by re fusing His work on Calvary and are standing before the Great White Throne for pronouncement of sentence. They will be cast into the lake of fire. 15

NAMES OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE im mediately bring to mind interesting facts about their particular abilities. For instance, Longfellow could take a worthless sheet of paper, write a poem on it and make it worth thou sands of dollars — that is genius. Rockefeller could sign his name to a piece of paper and make it worth millions. — thafs capital. Uncle Sam can take gold, stamp an eagle on it arid make it worth dollars — thafs money. A craftsman can take material that is worth only $5.00 and make an article worth $50.00 — that is skill. But God can take a life of sin and by washing that life in His blood can make it a blessing to thousands — that, my friends, is salvation. BIQLA: in a lens-eye_____ Dr. Charles J. Woodbridge Ministers on Campus

Dr. Charles J. Woodbridge (center with Bible), member of the staff of Word of Life in New York City, was special “Spirit ual Emphasis Week” speaker for Biola College this year. As a high point in the week of meetings, more than 150 pastors and Christian leaders from the Southland gathered to hear him speak on the dangers of neo-orothodoxy and the “new" evangelicalism. Denominational leaders pictured with him above are: Dr. Charles Mayes, Brethren; Dr.

Lowell Wendt, IFCA; Dr. Woodbridge; Dr. Samuel H. Sutherland, Biola Presi dent; and Dr. George Vouga, Con servative Baptist.

Have you ever tried to take a family picture and get everyone in just right position so that no heads are missing? Each year Dr. Sutherland, megaphone in hand, lines up the growing student body of Biola so that the large finished pic ture as shown above may be taken. The same photographer has been taking pictures of the student body for several decades.

Perhaps we should stop for just a moment at this point because we have a wonderful set of stairs in this particu lar verse. First there is a continuous action unfolding itself in the continu ous proving of the believer as he con forms in these things to the image of Christ. He proves in the renewing of his mind with the mind of Christ — step one: what is the good; step two: what is the acceptable, and third step: what is the perfect will of God. Then we see that not only the body and the mind, but in verse 3 we read that the very imaginations of a man’s mind and heart are to be given over-to Christ. As the Apostle Paul states in Romans 12:3, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of him self more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” Sometimes, you know, when a man is spoken of in some supreme way he accepts it as if it were true. That man should think soberly! The Scripture warns us again and again that man must not be high- minded but that he must have full control as the Word tells us in verse 3. And we find another area in which we are to be brought under control as far as the Holy Spirit is concerned. We see in verses 4-8 of this 12th chapter of Romans that as we have many mem bers in one body that have not the same functioning, so it is with us as mem bers of the body of Christ; some are given the gift of teaching while others that of leadership or ruling which they must do with diligence, showing mercy with cheerfulness. Also we are cau tioned that those who have the privi lege are to do it with simplicity. What ever gifts might be listed as of the Holy Ghost are to be brought under the leadership and ministry of the Holy Spirit. What you have received is not your own, it has been bought with a price and has been given to you to be used of the Holy Spirit. Finally we are admonished that our 20

read, where God’s Word tells us that we are to make a spiritual presentation of our bodies unto the Lord. At one time during the early years of my ministry, I heard a great Bible teacher make a significant statement: “You know, the Lord already has your soul; He already has your spirit the moment you believe in Christ. The great problem, as far as the believer is concerned, is the body in which he happens to be living with its passions, which the Bible presents to us again and again is this problem. Then, there is a second area of spir itual dedication to Christ and this, of course, is found in verse 2, “And be not confromed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Now the second area in which the New Testament believer is to be dedicated to Jesus Christ, is not only in the realm of the human body with its attendant problems, brought into subjection unto Jesus Christ. But the mind of the believer in his spiritual conformation to Christ is also to be transfigured unto the likeness of Christ because he is sanctified by the Holy Spirit and in this dedication to the Sav iour is, or ought to be, everything God would have it to be. Then we catch a glimpse of this little expression “renewing” — it means that the affections of the heart, the think ing of the mind, the fulness of the soul, and the drives of the body are all to be brought into subjection to the ministry of the Holy Spirit until Jesus Christ is Lord of our life. Our mind is to be renewed as we are conformed to His image and as we grow in grace. To pursue the thought further we see that in the matter of using a camera we come to discover that the “view finder” merges two separate vi sions, of an object into one. So it is that the Holy Spirit brings our mind, body and spirit into focus in Christ, thus we see conformation.

affections are to be dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ. In verses 9, 10 of this chapter we read “Let love be without hypocrisy, abhor that which is evil, cleave to that which is good, be kind ly affectioned one to another. . And dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil ■ clease to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another . . .” And in verses 14, 15 we have a difficult ad monition, “Bless them which persecute you, bless and curse not.' Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” Even our emotions, whatever that may mean to you in dividually, your emotions are to be under the control of the Holy Spirit. How deeply are you dedicated to Christ today in your gifts? What is your spir itual I.Q.? How far have you gone in the things of the Lord? STORIES OF TRAGEDY care not un common today, in fact the newspap ers have space for only a few of the many which are occuring. For in stance you no doubt read of Margie Ganger who was fatally burned when her home in Summit, New Jersey was consumed by fire. The irony of the incident was that she was rescued but she wildly ran back into th e ,house to get $35.00 which her father had given her with which to purchase her Easter cloth ing. This was a heart-breaking gamble for $35.00 worth of perishable gar ments. Yes, we say it was foolish but no more so than that person who gambles with his soul concerning the most important decision of sal vation. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world arid lose his own soul or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

I S I M P O R T A N T If you do not have a will to ex press your desire, your estate ( wheth er large or small) may be completely distributed by the courts in a way that you would never have done. Hundreds of Christians, though faithful in every other service for the Lord, have neglected to write a will. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS!
