m a rve ls : OF GOD'S WONDERFUL CREATION

With Drs. Walter L. Wilson and Louis T. Talbot

Q. Dr. Wilson, will you give us, in this, your last message of this series, some of the peculiarities of the things of God’s creation which carry a dis tinctly moral value? A. Well, we will try it. We will dis cuss the peanut. For instance, when we turn to the seventh chapter of Ecclesiastes we find this question, “Who can make that straight which God has made crooked?" We will fol low this with our own question, did you ever see a straight peanut? You cannot make a peanut straight to save your life. It is the same way in life, you will never find a sinless person. But I heard a preacher say one time that he had not sinned for twelve years. A little woman dressed in black and sitting in the back of the room spoke up and said, “mind I am here John.” She was his wife. Then I heard of a man who built a locomotive. He was an engineer for the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia. This model locomotive was only three feet long for his house. When he had finished it he put water in the boiler, put fire under it but it would not budge. It made steam but would not work and he asked the chief engineer to come and see what was wrong. The engineer went out and said to him that he had made it too perfect. The pistons and axles all fit too snugly and they would not func tion if they fit too accurately. There

must be room for friction and the use of oil. So he followed instructions, tore it down, and the result was a splen did running model. Every person you have ever seen is a sinner — some worse than others. But when they accept Christ, He re deems us and the Holy Spirit keeps us by the grace of God. How does the nut inside the peanut shell gets its nutrition? There is never any stem from the shell to the nut! It is surrounded by a thin brown piece of tissue and then there is a skin in side the shell and then there is the shell. There are three things between the nut and the stem. The nut gets its nutrition but I do not know how. Elihu said, “God giveth no account of any of His matters.” Another bit of creation which has a real lesson for us is the spider. We are told that -the spider takes hold with her hands and is in king’s palaces. Why does the Word say “her” hands? Be cause the female is the one that spins the web. Then, too, I have looked for a male spider for 40 years and have never seen one. He is about as big as the point of a pin. Now there are many servants in the king’s retinue and they see to it that no spiders enter the palace, if possible to keep them out. But the spider waits patiently for just that one chance. I saw a spider wait for four days before the window was opened — then she 33
