Au cours des 15 dernières années, le Club Optimiste de Rockland a été un partenaire important de la Cité de Clarence- Rockland en investissant plus de 200 000 $ dans des projets d’infrastructure com- munautaire majeurs, y compris la salle de spectacle Optimiste et une aire de planche à roulettes au Parc Simon. « Nous sommes extrêmement fiers du travail que nous avons accompli en 50 ans pour la communauté », a déclaré M. Charron. « Nous voulons être en mesure de rendre la pareille et d’offrir aux gens des activités qu’ils pourront apprécier. » Le Club Optimiste de Rockland organise deux événements de collecte de fonds chaque année : la vente de gâteaux aux fruits et de tartes en novembre et le sou- per de homard le premier samedi de juin. Fondé en mai 1974, l’organisme célèbre cette année son 50e anniversaire. « Nous nous sommes joints au groupe pour l’amitié, mais aussi parce que nous étions impressionnés par le travail qu’ils faisaient pour la communauté, alors c’est vraiment une grande partie de la raison pour laquelle nous nous sommes joints », a dé- claré Denis Vaillancourt, le président actuel du club, lors d’une entrevue la semaine où le groupe a célébré ses 50 ans au service de la communauté de Rockland. Le Club Optimiste de Rockland est cha- peauté par Optimist International (OI), un mouvement mondial qui compte près de 100 000 membres. Le Club Optimiste de Rockland est devenu membre d’un nouveau consortium de clubs Optimiste francophones à travers le pays à partir du 1er octobre 2021. Aujourd’hui, le club compte 42 membres. « C’est une occasion de faire du bien à la communauté », a déclaré Michel Char- ron, l’un des membres fondateurs du Club Optimiste de Rockland, qui est toujours actif au sein du groupe local. « Nous espérons inspirer les jeunes de notre communauté à devenir des membres actifs et à prendre

Open year-round Wednesday to Sunday, the kitchen and restaurant serve both the local community as well as golfers coming in off of 18, but whomever he’s serving, Berolo says creativity in cooking comes from a “child-like” process. He describes a playful twist on Terry’s Chocolate Orange, a popular childhood treat, which he once created a few years ago at another restaurant: he blanched a Clementine, cooked it sous vide in simple syrup for a couple of hours at 90F and stuffed it with chocolate-orange ice cream before freezing it. “We cut the orange in four pieces and served it in a wooden Clementine box. That ability is really important to me. Creativity comes from that arena you can put your mind in. Some amazing things come from
The Hammond Golf and Country Club restaurant shares space with Broken Stick Brewing Company which, at least when it first opened, was the first microbrewery in the country on a golf course. In addition to their attention to the craft of brewing fine beer and ale, craft breweries usually distinguish themselves by their unique settings. You will find microbreweries in dense urban areas and in more sparse and industrial pla- zas; some are exquisitely retro’d blacksmith shops, slit barns and textile factories in brick- and-beam buildings 150 years old. Some harken to an era when sawmills were in full operation or were massive facilities that once made washing machines and hockey sticks, or others popping up in buildings that were the very foundation of Canada’s whisky-distilling and cooperage history – using reclaimed old barrels to add flavour to hops and malted barley. Still others have bicycle themes, so why not golf? What has rapidly evolved over the years as the craft beer market has tightened – along with many consumers’ pocketbooks – has been the need for small brewers to define their

just playing around,” he says. Playful or not, his focus remains on prepa- ring food in-house and from scratch using as many local ingredients from the immediate area as possible. Organic lettuces, kale and vegetables come from Fireside Farms in Clarence Creek; their in-house charcuterie program prepares meats like culatello for one of Berolo’s eight wood- àSFE/FBQPMJUBOQJ[[BT “We make a salami with ghost peppers from our garden and grow heirloom tomatoes too,” he says. “We’ve also prepared fermented hot-pepper sauce that we’ve sold.” There’s the occasional “farm and forage” series, which features ingredients foraged from the Hammond property.
There’s Hammond honey too. Just outside the kitchen, tucked away adjacent to the 80-seat patio dining area, is Berolo’s wood-fired pizza oven which, when up and running, clocks in at about 700F. Burning area hardwood, the cooks stack the split logs in the oven and get the flames racing quickly by pointing a hairdryer at it. The Rockland Community Garden provides opportunities for residents to participate in voluntary fresh produce exchanges, access fresh produce donations, and engage in edu- cational workshops and projects.
Representatives of the Rockland Community Garden are applying for provincial grant money as they look to make the garden’s entrances more accessible. Sarah Lacombe, president of the Rockland Community Garden, made a presentation to Clarence-Rockland City Council earlier this month, detailing the organization’s plans to make the area easier to navigate for visitors. “We just want to eliminate the barriers that are there for certain people,” said Lacombe. The local organization is seeking grant support through the Government of Ontario’s Inclusive Community Grant, which will help as it seeks to fix the Patricia Street roadside entrance to make it safe and accessible for parking. The Rockland Community Garden is also looking to create a path connecting Patricia Street to the main garden entrance, and want to make a path from the secondary garden entrance up to the Raymond Street parking lot. The deadline to apply for the government grant is May 22, and if they are successful, they will be eligible for $60,000 in grant money. The City of Clarence-Rockland has already provided funding money in support of the project, which was granted last fall.

Herb-O-Dem Inc, the United Counties of Prescott and Russell and participating Municipalities intend to control weeds along guard rails and posts along the following rural roadsides. This pesticide use is for the promotion of public health or safety under the public works exception to the cosmetic pesticide ban in order to control and protect against the plants that could affect public works structures. The list of roads to be sprayed within the United Counties of Prescott and Russell is as follows: Prescott and Russell County Roads No: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29 and 31. Nation Municipality Roads: Rainville, Du Theatre, Baker, Calypso, Des Pins, Main, Indian Creek, Route 100, Route 500 East, Route 650, Burelle, Route 600, Longtin, Guerin, St-Paul South, Route 800 East, Caledonia Springs, Concession 6 West, Concession 6 East, Bradley Side Rd, Caledonia, Concession 7, Skye, Mainville, Concession 21, Concession 21 at Ste-Rose, Concession 20, Concession 19, Concession 17, Villeneuve Side Rd, Concession 16, Concession 15 West, Concession 15 East, Scotch and North Dixon. The following pesticides registered under the Pest Control Products Act (Canada) will be used: ARSENAL Powerline Herbicide (PCP #30203), which contains the active ingredient: Imazapyr (present as the isopropylamine salt), ClearView Herbicide (PCP #29752), which contains the active ingredients: Metsulfuron – methyl and Aminopyralid (present as potassium salt), Nufarm ESTAPROP XT Liquid Herbicide (PCP #29660), which contains the active ingredients: Dichlorprop and 2,4-D (both present as 2-ethylhexyl ester). From May 27 th , 2024, to June 14 th , 2024, depending on the weather.
